During his insightful discussion with Theo Von for the latest instalment of the comedian's This Past Weekend podcast, Morgan Wallen delved into a host of eye-catching topics, including his forthcoming album, his son's favourite song of his and more.
With the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper preparing to embark on his blockbuster 2025 stadium tour, Theo Von decided to get Morgan Wallen's opinion on some of his opening acts.
Wallen's I'm the Problem run features a staggering number of country heavyweights, cementing the ‘Love Somebody’ crooner's status as the biggest name in the genre today.
The Sneedville native explained that it was easy to organise Miranda Lambert and Brooks & Dunn as support, due to his friendship with both, “I'm good friends with Miranda, I'm good friends with Brooks & Dunn. There was already mutual interest, that was something that had already been in conversation for a little bit longer than just this year, so that one kind of worked itself out between them and my manager”.
Endearingly, Morgan Wallen paid homage to his ‘Mamaw's House’ collaborator, Thomas Rhett, with the ‘Everything I Love’ singer-songwriter underlining, “I'm good friends with Thomas Rhett as well...He's super nice...it all happened pretty naturally”.
Elsewhere during their conversation, Morgan Wallen donned Ella Langley, another of his openers, “a bad ass”, as well as celebrating Corey Kent and Anne Wilson. When it came to the latter, Wallen gushed, “She's a Christian artist by trade, but she's dabbling in the country music world. She's really good. She's on our agency”.
Amusingly - and perhaps unsurprisingly - Morgan Wallen revealed that he sees a lot of his younger self in Gavin Adcock, with Adcock building a reputation for his wild on-stage antics.
Wallen laughed, “[Gavin Adcock's] a wild man”, before emphasising, “I love that guy, man. He's definitely outlandish...he's entertaining and he's got a good voice. His music seems like it just keeps getting better too, so I'm happy for him, man”.
While touching on how his daily routine today is starkly different to how it was during his earlier days in the music industry, Morgan Wallen recalled, “The only regiment then was sleep til 4, start drinking at 5, you know what I mean? Like that's what it was then, and we gon' be good”, before musing, “Yeah, I think back in the day, if I had a camera on me like Adcock does now, they would be probably be saying some similar stuff about me. But he's a little more bold with it, I guess, than I was”.
Morgan Wallen has always blurred the lines between genres, and recently expressed an interest in making a house project under a new moniker in the future. It seems his versatility stems from the fact that he doesn't limit himself to country in his listening habits, “I've been trying to find new stuff to listen to, I don't find a whole lot of new stuff to listen to. I've been listening to like old...I mostly only listen to music if I'm driving or if I'm working out, which I do those things a decent amount”.
When Theo Von mentioned Morgan Wallen's Big Loud Records label-mate Stephen Wilson Jr. and Zach Top as two of his personal favourites, Wallen responded, “[Stephen Wilson Jr's] good. He's really good. He's a special talent...Yeah that guy is really, really good...I don't listen to country music a whole lot and I've always kind of been that way. I know who Zach Top is and I do agree, he's very solid”.
Morgan Wallen is currently gearing up to release his highly anticipated fourth studio album, I'm the Problem, on May 16th. With Wallen confirming on SNL last weekend that a range of tracks on the 37-song project will feature special guests, we're hoping he's joined forces with some of the artists he cited during this interview, as link-ups with Ella Langley and Anne Wilson would undoubtedly sound fantastic.
