Megan Moroney has shared a new snippet of an unreleased song, seemingly titled ’Heartbreaker’, with the excitement building ahead of the Georgia native's third studio album.
Moroney first teased the track back in February, alongside a video of her dancing by the ocean, with the infectious, uptempo offering finding the ’Tennessee Orange’ hitmaker dismissing the attempts of an old flame to crawl back into her life.
There's no release date just yet, but with this marking the second time Megan Moroney has uploaded a snippet of ‘Heartbreaker’, it certainly feels like the song is on the horizon.
We suspect this may be the next single to drop from Moroney's new album, with the 2024 CMA New Artist of the Year perhaps planning to share another track from the project while she takes a couple of weeks off from her Am I Okay? tour in June.
Across an energising instrumental that feels cut from the same jubilant cloth as her recent Kenny Chesney duet, ‘You Had To Be There’, Megan Moroney playfully croons, “Let me set you the scene / November, circa 2019 / Put a hole in my heart, watched it bleed / You said that we were better off as strangers / I was barely alive / Out of six feet deep, I was five / Pretty sure they called a hearse outside”.
Few artists are able to inject a light, tongue-in-cheek tone into their music, while maintaining the emotional weight of the overarching narrative, in the way that Moroney can.
Here, for instance, she teasingly sings, “Okay, that's dramatic / But I survived, then I survived / The ‘Hey Meg, I think I want you back’ / I'm a couple drinks in, thinking it's my bad / That I let you walk away and let you go’ / It's a tale as old as time, I guess / When you couldn't care more, I couldn't care less / You're a little too late to the party, heartbreaker / What doesn't kill you, calls you six months later”.
Inevitably, with Morgan Wallen's ‘TN’ currently going viral on TikTok because of fan-theories that he penned the track about Megan Moroney, some followers have been taking to the comments of Moroney's ‘Heartbreaker’ snippet to speculate that this is her response to ’TN’. However, Moroney first shared this clip months ago, so while it's possible Wallen is the ex in question, it's unlikely this is a reply to ‘TN’.
A few listeners are pointing to the ‘Heartbreaker’ tale of the past lover realising he was at fault as a continuation of the narrative from Wallen's ‘Tennessee Numbers’ and Moroney's ’No Caller ID’, which some believe to be two sides of the same story.
Following the arrival of the nostalgic ‘You Had To Be There’ with Kenny Chesney in May - which the pair performed during Chesney's Sphere Las Vegas show last week - Megan Moroney confirmed to Billboard that her forthcoming album will be a “different vibe” compared to Lucky and Am I Okay? Moroney also revealed that she's still got “a couple more songs” to finish up for the project.
Given the fact that the ‘No Caller ID’ singer-songwriter has been sharing a flurry of social media posts from the sunny US Virgin Islands in recent months - in true Kenny Chesney fashion - we're wondering if Megan Moroney's third album is going to take on a more joyful, laid-back and possibly even tropically-minded atmosphere.
Either way, judging by how addictive these unreleased snippets have been so far, MM3 is already shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated records of 2025.
