Any professional lip-readers out there?
In a new video series for Elle Magazine, Megan Moroney is asked to prank call a few loved ones - and one particular clip has a number of fans thinking the ’You Had To Be There’ hitmaker might have just name-dropped her long-rumoured ex, Morgan Wallen.
Despite never explicitly confirming they were ever a couple, the lore surrounding Moroney and Wallen runs deep. From the rollout surrounding ‘Tennessee Orange’, which involved a flirtatious back-and-forth about a Volunteers jersey that Wallen leant to Moroney, to Moroney's implication that the duo were involved on Call Her Daddy, to fan-theories tying together an array of songs in each artist's categories, claiming they're inspired by the supposed romance.
As a result, although Moroney never hides the fact that her and Wallen are still friends, whenever she references him or shows love to his music - as we saw recently with the furore that ensued when she included ‘TN’ in her Apple Music Summertime Sounds playlist - it reignites the intrigue as fans fall back down the lore rabbit-hole.
In recent months, it's become evident as Moroney has navigated swirling rumours surrounding her dating life - whether these revolved around Wallen, Riley Green or Nick Bosa - that the ‘Heaven By Noon’ singer-songwriter is a seasoned pro at not letting this invasive speculation throw her off as she continues her ascent.
So much so that Moroney often feels comfortable toying with rumour-mongers and making light of dating conjecture - epitomised by her new prank-call video with Elle Magazine.
During the series, Moroney prank-calls her mom to claim indecent images of her have leaked online, as well as her Creative Director, Cece Dawson, to request a last-minute change in the colour theme for her eagerly awaited third studio album.
But the video that has piqued fans’ interest the most is undoubtedly Moroney's prank-call to one of her best friends, Becca Turner, during which she claims she is thinking of inviting a particular ex to her Red Rocks show, leaving poor Turner speechless.
Moroney begins, “Hey...I need you to talk me out of this, because I feel like it's a really bad idea. But I think I'm gonna invite [...] to Red Rocks, and he's flying there tomorrow...” Although the name is bleeped out, it definitely looks like the Georgia native is saying, ‘Morgan Wallen’, and fans have flooded the comments pointing this out.
Heartwarmingly, Turner attempts to gently discourage her friend, without being too harsh, “No way. I don't know. That's such a tough situation. I never, like, hated him. I just always felt like, when you guys were together, like, I don't know, his person...Especially in the beginning, I feel like he was super nice, but then every time...”
Hilariously, Moroney doubles down, “He said that if he comes, he wants to, like, propose in the next year...”, leaving Turner to reply, ““What?! That would be an insane twist”.
Then, Moroney puts Turner out of her misery, revealing, “ I can't continue this. I'm prank-calling you. I'm with Elle Magazine, and I have to prank-call people”. Turner takes it well, joking, “I'm gonna die...You actually got my blood pressure up so much. I was like, ‘He definitely hates my guys’. I was like, ‘This is going to be so awkward’”.
Moroney laughs about how kind Turner was as she stressed to her friend how terrible this idea was. Moroney paraphrases, “‘In the most polite way, you were like, bad with him’”.
Of course, it's entirely possible that we've misread Moroney's lips, and she was instead referring to another ex with a similar name to Wallen. Either way, it undoubtedly appears she's saying the Sneedville megastar's name, and fans are going bezerk.
With Moroney currently gearing up to announce her keenly anticipated new album - which we think may be titled Cloud 9 (here's why) - we're wondering if there will be a new song about Wallen. We can't know for sure - but one thing we do know is that this next body of work is going to be another stellar, hit-filled opus, and we can't wait to hear the full project when it hopefully drops in early 2026...
