We're not crying, you are.
In the US, it's Veterans Day today, where we honour those who have served in the United States Armed Forces, and reflect on the immeasurable sacrifices made by those fighting for their country. Similarly, across The Pond, it's Remembrance Day, where we remember those who valiantly gave their lives in the First World War.
Country music has always enjoyed a special relationship with the armed forces, with many artists - such as Toby Keith and Carrie Underwood - travelling to bases overseas to perform for the military, as well as incorporating themes of sacrifice and the challenges faced by veterans when they return home into their music.
To mark this solemn day, Luke Combs has reshared a moving clip of him performing his unreleased track, ‘Ever Mine’, which he wrote with Charlie Worsham and Hailey Whitters. It's a haunting, visceral tribute to the kind of love that can defiantly survive even the most cruel tests, and that lasts long beyond the grave.
It's a beautifully intricate and heart-rending offering, which finds Combs stepping into the shoes of a soldier writing a letter to his wife, who anxiously awaits his return.
In the caption, the North Carolina native has emphasised that this one has always held a special place in his heart, “In honor of Veterans Day tomorrow, here’s “Ever Mine.” We wrote this from the perspective of a soldier writing a letter to his wife during war without knowing if he’ll ever see her again. Love this one a lot”.
We've been waiting a while for this one to be given a full streaming release, with Combs first sharing an acoustic rendition of the track during lockdown in December 2020. Just seeing him in his living room performing it transports us back to that strange period of time, when our favourite artists were performing for us via Zoom.
With Combs dropping four albums since then, we'd all but given up on the prospect of ever hearing a studio version of ’Ever Mine’. But this new reshare and the ’Hurricane’ hitmaker's admission that he loves this song has offered us a glimmer of hope. Combs is currently honing his next studio album, which is expected to arrive in early 2026, and we'll be keeping everything crossed ’Ever Mine’ is featured.

“My dearest darlin'
I miss you more than words can tell
I hope the gardens growin tall
You're in good spirits and good health
We've traveled far now with a long way to go still
I know not yet when I'll return or if I ever will
-
Each day grows colder
Filled with powder, smoke, and steel
I worry before it's over, I've forgotten how to feel
I keep your picture in the pocket of my coat
I sometimes find when I'm alone it's my last bit of hope
-
Amidst the grips of these troubled times
Way back to you I always find
You're the wind that whispеrs through the pines
Bloom in the rows, green on thеm vines
Until we meet again my love sincerely signed
I'm ever yours, you're ever mine
-
Some of these boys aren't much older than our own
They fight like men and then get cut down before they're grown
This is my prayer that our daughter and our sons wrap their arms around each other and never around a gun
-
Amidst the grips of these troubled times
Way back to you I always find
You're the wind that whispers through the pines
Bloom in the rows green on them vines
Until we meet again my love sincerely signed
I'm ever yours, you're ever mine
-
If you should hear it's come my time
Way back to you I always find
I'll be the wind that whisper through the pines
Pitch in the black, star in the shine
Meet again on the other side
I'm ever yours, you're ever mine”
