With more than 25 No. 1s under his belt, Luke Bryan is no stranger to a country music smash hit.
But, while everyone always brags about the blockbuster successes throughout their career, there's also so many stories to tell about the songs that got away and became career-defining hits for someone else, which is a pretty common occurrence in the country music world.
During a recent interview with radio personality Bobby Bones, Bryan spilled the tea on one of those songs that could've been, explaining that as country music and his career have evolved over the last twenty years, so too has the music he's released.
"There was one point in my career that I had sang about trucks enough to where I passed, stupidly, on Morgan [Wallen]'s 'Sand in My Boots' because it had Chevrolet in it," he admitted.
"I just went through two years of my life where I was like, 'I sing about trucks a lot. I sing about tailgates,'" he shared with a laugh. "I think I got in my head a little bit because I had a lot of negativity on socials that I was getting pegged as a one-trick pony."
While it's true that for most of the first half of his career Bryan rinsed and repeated the same general formula of truck + beer + girl = hit song – his list of chart-toppers includes 'Country Girl (Shake It For Me), 'That's My Kind of Night' and 'All My Friends Say,' among others – there's no denying that 'Sand In My Boots' was one of those songs that would've become a staple for the Georgia hitmaker.
Released by Wallen in 2021 as the third single from Dangerous: The Double Album, the piano ballad marked Wallen's fifth No. 1 at country radio, topping the Country Airplay charts and reaching No. 30 on the Billboard 100, and eventually going 2x Platinum in the US.
In the end, 'Sand In My Boots' definitely ended up in the right hands – especially seeing as its singer will be hosting his inaugural festival of the same name late next month – and all it took was one little line in the chorus: “But now I’m dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado.”
