After Kenny Chesney surged to the top of The New York Times’ Hardcover Nonfiction and Combined Print and E-Book Nonfiction Best Seller rankings with his first ever book, HEART*LIFE*MUSIC, fans are inevitably now clamouring for a second.
With HEART*LIFE*MUSIC - which Chesney co-write with his friend, Holly Gleason - arriving just over a month ago, we imagine they're still celebrating the immense success of this book. But even so, given how popular the project has been proving, with Chesney embarking on a blockbuster book tour across North America, we'd be surprised if the thought of a follow-up hadn't already crossed their minds.
During a new conversation with Melissa Ziobro, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Director of Public History at Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music's, Chesney has addressed the prospect of one day releasing a second book.
The ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems’ hitmaker begins, “Let's get past this one first!”, before teasing, “But yeah, that's possible. I mean, I've realized that I've got a few stories to tell. I'm very, very passionate about sports. I'm passionate...There's so many stories we didn't tell...of my road-life and connection with fans”.
Excitingly, it sounds like Chesney could be toying with the idea of a more sports-based book, perhaps building off his Boys of Fall documentary, which aired back in 2010. The Knoxville native has cited that as a key turning-point in his career, that arrived during a stretch when he was struggling to reignite his spark for music.
He also hints that there is plenty of material still in the can, so to speak, that didn't make it into HEART*LIFE*MUSIC, particularly regarding his experiences out on the road.
Chesney goes on to underline more definitively that there will be a second book, even if the subject matter is still up in the air, “I mean, of course...There has to be another book at some point, but we don't really know exactly what that is just yet. But I've enjoyed the process, and to see how people care about what we have to say, especially...the true fans that have been here for a while...I haven't talked about my life that much, you know? I've been recreating our stage and our show every year, and pushing the envelope when it comes to creativity, trying to grow as an artist - and it doesn't leave a lot of time for reflection”.
He stresses, nonetheless, that it's been a rewarding process, “But I'm glad I did it, because it opened up a lot of different doors, and when it comes to that, we realized that there's a lot we didn't tell in this book, and that I might want to tell in the future”.
It's a thrilling prospect, especially for an artist as private as Chesney, where a lot of these eclectic tales and vibrant, life-affirming moments of realisation haven't been shared with the public before. Given how engaging HEART*LIFE*MUSIC is, and how masterfully Gleason has woven together the key strands in Chesney's journey, we'd certainly love to read another body of work from them.
