Following the announcement that Tim McGraw will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year, Kenny Chesney has taken to social media to offer a heartwarming homage to his long-time friend and ‘Feel Like a Rock Star’ collaborator.

Chesney and McGraw have a storied track record of recording and performing together, with the duo co-headlining the momentous Brothers of the Sun Tour in the early 2010s.

They also infamously got arrested at the turn of the century, with Chesney reportedly riding off on a mounted police officer's horse and McGraw allegedly involved in a scuffle.

It's a brotherhood that has produced some fantastic on-stage link-ups, and we still return to the electrifying ‘Feel Like a Rock Star’, which appeared on Chesney's brilliant - and widely underrated - Welcome to the Fish Bowl studio album in 2012.

In his new post, Chesney touchingly reflects on crossing paths with McGraw in a small, unassuming cafe in Nashville before either had achieved major success in the industry, “I met Tim McGraw in 1991 at a meat and three lunch place called Mack’s cafe. I was brand new in Nashville and didn’t really know anybody. That was the beginning of our friendship and our journey in this business together”.

The ‘I Go Back’ hitmaker goes on, “Although Tim went on the road before I did we shared the same dream, the same love for great songs, and knew we were standing on the shoulders of our musical heroes once our dreams started to come true”.

Chesney emphasises how happy he is for his good buddy after the news broke that he would be entering the Country Music Hall of Fame, “We have been through a lot together on the road and off and today I am overwhelmed with joy to find out that my friend Tim McGraw will be inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame”.

Chesney, of course, was welcomed into the hallowed institution as part of the 2025 class, with the Tropical Country trailblazer serenaded by Kelsea Ballerini, Megan Moroney and Eric Church as part of his induction. We'd love to see Chesney serving up a McGraw cover if he's invited to be a part of the latter's induction later this year.

Chesney stresses that McGraw is worth of all the accolades, “You deserve all of it Tim. I am proud to be your friend and to be on this amazing Journey with you. Who knew those two kids at Mack’s Cafe 35 years ago wouldn’t just share some of the biggest stages together, but would one day share a place in the country music hall of fame. I love you brother and I’m so happy for you and your family”.

In a modern country landscape that often feels a little divisive and fractious, with various artists at one another hurling jibes and not-so-subliminal shots across Music City, it's refreshing to see this enduring camaraderie between Chesney and McGraw.

They've been at the pinnacle of the genre for decades, and it would've been easy for them to turn from pals into rivals. But instead of cultivating a sense of competition or bitterness, these two country titans prioritised and leaned into their friendship.

We can't wait for McGraw's 2026 Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which will also see Paul Overstreet and The Stanley Brothers honoured. We're keeping our fingers crossed we get more music from McGraw and Chesney soon.
