Following the arrival of her spectacular new album, Sex Hysteria, on Friday (July 18th), Jessie Murph has graced the stage on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a stunning performance on her old-timey, retro-tinged anthem, ‘1965’.
The satirical, sepia-tinted track finds Murph playfully wondering what it would have been like to be in love in the 1960's, where there was no Snapchat and her partner would write her adoring letters, rather than hitting her up with a 3am booty-call.
The Alabama prodigy brought the atmosphere of the song to life on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, with Murph interspersing her blunt, tongue-in-cheek musings with light, balletic choreography. The curtain opened on Murph being lifted triumphantly in the sky, before her dancers leave, with just one remaining.
He then played the part of Jessie Murph's husband, with the duo mirroring one another as they danced across the mock living room. They conveyed the conflicted romanticisation of this period of time, before concluding with a spotlight on Murph alone.
Often, when artists perform on Fallon, they simply turn up with their band and deliver a standard, no-frills rendition of a track. Murph's cinematic portrayal of ‘1965’, therefore, was a welcome change that cements the ‘Blue Strips’ singer-songwriter's status as one of the most exciting new voices in the modern music landscape.
‘1965’ is joined on Sex Hysteria by a slew of immensely viral earworms, such as ‘Touch Me Like a Gangster’ and ‘Gucci Mane’, with the project showcasing Murph's versatility by exploring a plethora of genres, ranging from trap to R&B to pop to country.
