Country sensation Jelly Roll has been on a 'Winning Streak' lately, his newest release Beautifully Broken having recently notched No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200. The victory, however, was apparently marred by a touch of attempted sabotage.
During an appearance on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show, the artist dissected a recent chart battle between himself, pop star Charli XCX and rapper Rod Wave, who were all vying for No. 1 album during the final weeks of October.
Jelly Roll called the sports talk show a "safe place" to speak on the recent drama and what he has referred to as the "slimy stuff" of the music industry.
Without naming names but omitting one frontrunner in particular (Charli XCX), Jelly Roll broke down the situation, explaining, “There was an artist that looked like Hits Double Daily projected that they wasn't even going to be within 50, 60,000 albums of me and Rod Wave.”
He continued, “And then Thursday night, before the Friday count ends, 40,000 albums — [a] third-party aggregated site had that. And you’re looking and you’re just like, ‘Yo, that’s just slimy.'”
He claims the star's team padded the album sales numbers in an attempt to earn the top spot, adding “Now Luminate, who is in charge of counting record sales, rejected these sales, which is how I ended up with the No. 1 album, so that’s the truth."
In the end, Jelly Roll's Beautifully Broken debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200, with Rod Wave's Last Lap following at No. 2 and Charli XCX's remix project, Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat, coming in at No. 3.
