The easter eggs are hatching, the cryptic clues are in full flow and the tantalising teasers are dropping quicker than ever, as the excitement continues to build ahead of Megan Moroney's third album. The title is yet to be officially unveiled, but there's a fascinating new fan-theory that we think might have it all figured it out...
Credit where credit is due, this theory stems from the @moremoroney IG page, which has compiled some of Moroney's posts to make a case for the album being called Cloud 9.
Any Moroney aficionado is aware that the ‘Tennessee Orange’ hitmaker has been teasing the number ‘nine’ for months. These clues have come in the form of Moroney using nine emojis, nine ‘o's’ in ‘nooooooooo’, photos containing the number - such as a San Francisco 49ers jersey with ‘Moroney 9’ on the back - and much more.
Initially, we thought this was directing fans’ attention towards Moroney's birthday - October 9th. In the end, we were treated to a live album on this date, but the ‘I'm Not Pretty’ singer-songwriter has continued teasing ‘nine’ after the release of this project.
The @moremoroney fan-account has made a compelling case for these ‘nine’ clues being related to the title of Moroney's next album, as well as highlighting how the Georgia native has been using cloud emojis frequently in her posts in recent weeks.
There have also been an array of unassuming, scenic shots of clouds nestled in the middle of Moroney's Instagram carousels. All of this comes together to indicate that - potentially, at least - Moroney's third studio album could be called Cloud 9.
We've done some additional digging, and spotted that throughout Moroney's ‘Six Months Later’ music video, there are a lot of recurring cloud motifs. In the background of the Karma Now! TV broadcast, for instance, clouds constantly float past, while you can also see a cloud poster on the wall of Moroney's bedroom with “It's a long way down” emblazoned across it - perhaps a lyric from the title-track?
What's more, when Moroney is in the call-centre and checks the toxic ex's biography, there are cloud stickers dotted across it. There's also a potential clue as to the album's release date, with ‘Megan’ listed as the man's girlfriend for November on the ‘Dating History’ section, while there's a blank space for December. This could be a hint that the project will be arriving in November or December 2025.
The theme of Cloud 9 would certainly align with what Moroney has been saying of late about how this next chapter will be “happier” and more carefree. During an interview with Audacy's Katie & Company earlier in the year, for instance, Moroney explained, “This next set of music is a lot happier than what you would expect, but I feel like that's just where I'm at in life. I feel like for once I'm just chillin', I love it”.
She did, however, reassure fans that she will never completely depart from her signature Emo Cowgirl aesthetic, “I do have one gut-wrenching song on the album. There's a few sad songs still, cause I would never abandon my emo cowgirl-ness, but for the album as a whole, I do think it's a lot more carefree, sassy and fun”.
There's also the important matter of the new album's colour theme, which was previously thought to be purple, but yellow is now re-emerging as a possible option. Moroney has been donning either purple or yellow in a number of public appearances throughout 2025, and yellow would undoubtedly fit the joyful, Cloud 9 theme.
Even so, we still feel purple is the leading candidate at the moment, especially after Moroney's comments at the 2025 MTV VMAs, and her decision to wear a striking purple necklace.
With the latest sneak preview of Moroney's next era, ‘Beautiful Things’, arriving on October 24th, we suspect we might get some more details on the album in tandem with this drop.
As well as ‘Beautiful Things’, the project is expected to feature the already-released ’Six Months Later’ and ‘You Had To Be There’ with country icon, Kenny Chesney.
The project isn't even officially announced yet, but judging by this stellar trio of singles, we're already tipping this to be an Album of the Year candidate. Call us crazy, but hey, they say you've got to reach for the stars, so if you fall you land on a cloud...☁️
