Fans that have been clamouring for Hozier to release his new song, ’Nobody's Soldier’, were given hope over the weekend as the folk-pop hitmaker chose to add the track to his setlist.
Excitingly, this doesn't appear to be a temporary inclusion, with Hozier deciding to perform the ethereal, emphatic song at each of his recent festival dates at Hinterland and Osheaga in Iowa and Quebec respectively. This follows the Irish singer-songwriter's live debut of ‘Nobody's Soldier’ as part of his high-profile Lollapalooza set last week.
As well as offering us the strongest indication yet that he's planning to release ‘Nobody's Soldier’ soon, Hozier's introduction of the song into his 2024 setlist means we've now been able to hear the full version of the track for the first time. Previously, we had to feed off scraps of brief, 30-second snippets that had emerged online.
Having performed ‘Nobody's Soldier’ in its entirety, it seems clear - as fans had suspected - the track is a rallying, defiant anthem of independence in the mould of ‘Take Me to Church’. Sonically, ’Nobody's Soldier’ seems to run in a similar vein to ‘De Selby (Part 2)’, which appeared on Hozier's lauded 2023 album, Unreal Unearth.
On the track, Hozier reflects on how deeply moved and disturbed he feels when hearing of the harrowing events happening across the world, “Sick to my skin / Watching the Nеws again / Whatever you choose, you lose out in the long run / Paint on the walls / Comes down like a waterfall / The goal I was aiming for was the wrong one”.
As July drew to a close, Hozier teased another unreleased track named after the month, as well as confirming he is readying a new EP, which is expected to arrive in the coming weeks. Given how he's started performing ‘Nobody's Soldier’ regularly, it seems we can be relatively confident that the track - which has struck a chord with fans across social media - will be part of that forthcoming project.
