As storms were raging all across Middle Tennessee on Saturday night (February 15), Cody Johnson was bringing the thunder to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.
Marking the second of back-to-back sold out nights at the famed Music City venue, 16,000 of the Texas native's dedicated fans gathered to watch one of the modern torchbearers of traditional country music light up the stage alongside Ashley McBryde and Drew Baldridge.
Ushered onto the stage by a lively dance along of the 'Macarena' (yes, you read that right), Johnson quickly blasted into one beloved hit after another, the audience screaming along to every word from the first line of opening song 'That's Texas.'
Before long, the first surprise of the night came with the arrival of Ian Munsick, who happily joined the 'Dear Rodeo' singer for a chilling rendition of their duet, 'Long Live Cowgirls.'
From there, it was off to the races as Johnson sailed through vulnerable ballads like 'Human' and 'The Fall,' offering in equal measure romping tunes like 'Take It Like A Man' and the bluegrass-tinged 'Georgia Peaches.'
Yet, the moment everyone was really waiting for came when the first notes of Johnson's current single at country radio, 'I'm Gonna Love You,' rang out.
As everyone waited with baited breath to see if duet partner Carrie Underwood would emerge to supply her glorious harmonies to the song, the arena broke out into stunned cheers as the former American Idol winner turned country superstar ascended the stage's steps, their voices swelling in perfect unison.
Unsure how the evening could be topped, Johnson delivered a trio of his No. 1 hits – 'Dirt Cheap,' 'The Painter' and ''Til You Can't' – all of which earned a deafening singalong from the packed venue as they matched the award-winning entertainer pound for pound.
Little did the audience know that there was still one last surprise up Johnson's pressed sleeve, which he saved for very last.
After playing a moving version of early bonafide hit, 'Diamond in My Pocket,' the Texan provided the biggest shock of all as country megastar Luke Combs stormed the stage for a rowdy rendition of 'Beer Never Broke My Heart.'
As we've learned in recent years, there's no telling what Nashville shows have in store when it comes to special guests and surprise appearances, and CoJo delivered in spades when it came to his second sold out night at Bridgestone Arena.
"I've been playing music professionally for twenty years," Johnson shared with the crowd at the top of the evening. "When I came to Nashville, one of the first meetings I had I was told very clearly that this cowboy hat was not gonna be a thing in Nashville."
He continued as the audience booed the notion, "I had a choice to get bitter and say, 'I guess that's the cards life dealt me,' or I could pull this hat down, go to work and surround myself with good people who believe in real country music like I believe in it still to this day. God has a plan and everything happens for a reason.
"This is our second sold out show in Nashville... Guess what? It worked out."
Johnson will continue on his Leather Deluxe Tour through the beginning of May with upcoming shows in New York, Ohio, Louisiana and more.
Along the way, he'll also be on hand at the 2025 edition of C2C Festival across the UK, as well as make a trip down under to Australia and New Zealand come the end of March.
