With the influx of TikTok artists and viral country songs, we've seen quite a few bonafide one hit wonders over the last few years. Yet not all of these talented artists are just flashes in the pan.
Reigning above them all is none other than the line dancing sensation, Dasha, who earlier this year took over our feeds and radio dials with her breakthrough hit, 'Austin.' Nabbing billions of views and streams over the last six months and peaking at No. 3 and No. 19 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Hot 100 charts, respectively, the country music world has had their eyes peeled on what the California hitmaker would do next.
Now, with the arrival of her highly-anticipated follow-up, 'Didn't I,' Dasha has cemented her reputation as one of the genre's most buzzed about up-and-comers, leading the way for the next generation of country-pop hopefuls.
Written alongside Ben Johnson and Emily Weisband, both proven hitmakers in their own right, Dasha's newest offering is a continuation of the story we've come to know so well from 'Austin.'
Where 'Austin' served as a massive middle finger to her no good, heart breaking ex boyfriend, 'Didn't I' shows the other side of the same coin as Dasha claims that their toxic relationship is over and she's determined to leave him in the dust. However, the pair of star-crossed lovers continue to make excuses and come back to each other despite knowing that it's an idea best left alone.
“'Didn't I' is so nostalgic, there's something about my past that intrigues me, including the men," Dasha shares in a statement. "In the writer's room, I was referring to a time months and months ago when I was backsliding into the guy that 'Austin' is about. It's admitting like, 'oops here I am again, my bad' but I love how we made it lighthearted and fun."
"Didn’t I swear you were dead to me / Didn’t you scream that I had to leave / Didn’t I slam your damn front door / Saying I ain’t ever gonna come back no more," she sings in the chorus, chronicling the toxic aspects of their relationship and her conviction to be rid of her ex. Before it's end, though, the script is flipped as they reunite and she's left wondering, "Why am I here with your lips on mine / Coulda sworn I said this was over / Didn’t I?"
A simply infectious tune, it's a track that perfectly marries all of the right country elements with effortlessly catchy lyrical muscle, creating a three-minute cocktail of pure brain-tingling bliss that has the makings to be an even bigger hit than 'Austin' was before it.
Ahead of her coveted Grand Ole Opry debut, Dasha sat down with Holler to discuss some of her highlights from the last year and being ushered into the country music family, as well as the making of her newest infectious offering.
"We wrote the entire song and kind of free styled the chorus and the melody. We wrote it in literally 30 minutes and the vocal you hear was the one take I did before we got out of there. Not a single other vocal was recorded, that's basically the demo that we walked out with," she explained, gushing with excitement over her newest earworm. "Songs like that are so rare but so special because that's when you're not overthinking anything. It's just pure talent and intuition. I wish every session was like that!"
Finding herself on stages from Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the 2024 CMT Awards, to Nashville's Nissan Stadium and the Grand Ole Opry, Dasha has all but proven that she's here to stay as her star power has only become more blinding.
