Everything you need to know about this wistful song, taken from Ella Langley's 2026 studio album, ‘Dandelion’.
One of the handful songs from Dandelion that Ella Langley performed ahead of the album's release on April 10th, 2026, ‘Somethin’ Simple’ finds the ‘you look like you love me’ singer-songwriter readjusting her outlook. It dawns on her after years of chasing the spotlight and sold-out stadiums that, in reality, she yearns for a slow life.
The composition of ‘Somethin’ Simple’ mirrors the stripped-back, simplified way of life Langley is singing about. There's an easygoing, laid-back ambience throughout this offering, with the pedal steel and electric guitars combining with the undulating drums to create a peaceful, gentle atmosphere. Langley's vocals are as compelling as always, while Ben West provides a warm set of backing harmonies.
Throughout ‘Somethin’ Simple’, as the title suggests, Langley is outlining how she longs for a simpler, more restful life. She begins by expressing her immense gratitude for all the dazzling, glamorous perks of her stardom, and the fact that she prayed to be able to sing to thousands of adoring fans - as she does today.
But Langley goes on to admit that her prayers look a little different now, before painting a bucolic, idyllic scene of an evening spent picking her guitar on the back porch, gazing out at a horse in the yard and looking forward to spending time with her partner.
There's a striking, intentional sense of juxtaposition between the aspirations and ambitions of the opening verse and the peaceful, down-home imagery of the hook. ‘Somethin’ Simple’ continues the recurring theme of praying and communicating with God - also a key aspect of ‘Speaking Terms’, for instance - as our narrator here has learned to be a little more patient, and to appreciate the simple things in life.
When debuting ‘Somethin’ Simple’ at SXSW 2026 in March, Langley explained why she decided to include the heartfelt track on Dandelion, “This song made it on the record because I thought it described what I've pictured for my life in the next few years”.
“I used to want this so bad
I swore I could taste it
Did anything and everything it took
Took a lot to get where I’m at
So I ain’t gonna waste it
And damn if it don’t feel good
But I miss my mama
And that small town drama
Got what I wanted
But what If I still wanna
-
House on a hill
A horse in the yard
A dog at my feet
Just a-pickin’ my guitar
The sun going down
Supper on the stove
A hard workin’ man
Taking off his dirty work clothes
While I’m living the dream
All I’m dreaming about
Is slowing down just a little
When I lay down and close my eyes
I'm looking for somethin’ simple
-
I don’t want out at the bar
I want out on the back porch
Ain’t a lick of make up on
Don’t wanna wait by the phone
I want I can’t wait to see you
When he’s already halfway home
To a
-
House on a hill
A horse in the yard
A dog at my feet
Just a-pickin’ my guitar
The sun going down
Supper on the stove
A hard workin’ man
Taking off his dirty work clothes
While I’m living the dream
All I’m dreaming about
Is slowing down just a little
When I lay down and close my eyes
I’m looking for somethin’ simple
-
Ain’t it kinda funny how the prayers
You pray tend to change some times
Went from wishing I was singing under big bright lights
To wishing I was headed home tonight
To a
-
House on a hill
A horse in the yard
A dog at my feet
Just a-pickin’ my guitar
The sun going down
Supper on the stove
A hard workin’ man
Taking off his dirty work clothes
While I’m living the dream
All I’m dreaming about
Is slowing down just a little
When I lay down and close my eyes
I'm looking for somethin’ simple”
