Everything you need to know about this honky-tonkin’ anthem, taken from Ella Langley's 2026 studio album, ‘Dandelion’.
One of the more traditional odes on Ella Langley's sophomore album, Dandelion, ‘I Gotta Quit’ finds Langley playfully bemoaning how she can't get an ex out of her head.
The mood is jovial and tongue-in-cheek throughout, but naturally, fans have been speculating about who ‘I Gotta Quit’ might have been inspired by. The lines referencing an ex's “grandpa's farm” led some to wonder if the song is about Langley's long-rumoured - but never confirmed - romance with Riley Green, who's always singing about his love for his grandpa and does, of course, own a farm.
This feels a little tenuous by itself, but the fact that Langley also references a “blonde hair blue eyed ten” has the online rumour mill spinning, with fans suggesting this could be about Megan Moroney. There was the famous alleged love triangle in 2025, where Langley and Green were believed to be dating, with Green then spotted driving around with Moroney in his home-state of Alabama. This image of the duo in an old car is rumoured - emphasis on ‘rumoured’ - to have inspired the cover artwork for Langley's Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single, ‘Choosin’ Texas’.
We'll likely never know if ‘I Gotta Quit’, which was penned by Langley alongside Joybeth Taylor and Aaron Raitiere, was indeed inspired by true events - but one thing's for sure, it's a certified honky-tonkin’ earworm. Langley debuted it at Nashville's Listening Room Café towards the end of 2025, with fans clamouring for an official release ever since. Thankfully, the ‘Be Her’ crooner decided to include it on Dandelion.
‘I Gotta Quit’ is a classic country anthem that sounds like it's arrived straight out of a ‘70s Texas dance-hall, with Langley leaning into her charismatic Alabama drawl throughout. The instrumental is lively and galvanising, with an vibrant, twang-infused electric guitar combining with the uptempo drums to produce a toe-tapping gem.
Even the reverb-laden vocal effects on Langley's voice feels retro and old-timey, giving ‘I Gotta Quit’ a wonderfully nostalgic and unashamedly country ambience throughout.
“When I’m walkin’ down the road
When I’m starin’ at the sky
When I’m gettin’ too low
When I’m gettin’ too high
If my day’s goin’ good
If my day’s goin’ bad
If I’m mad at the world
Or I’m mad at my dad”
Langley jokingly lists all the times she catches herself thinking about an ex - which, as we learn over the course of the song, is almost always. She outlines how, regardless of whether she's feeling up or down, whether she's looking at the ground or gazing at the sky, our protagonist's old flame somehow manages to sneak into her mind.
“When I’m all pissed off
With my panties in a wad
And I can’t find the words
Just “Oh my God”
Hate to say it out loud
Wish it wasn’t true
But damn it I gotta quit
Thinkin’ about you”
Langley admits that she can't help but turn her attention back to their romance, with the Alabama native reprimanding herself, declaring, “Damn it, I gotta guit / Thinkin’ about you”.
“If I’m headed to the beach
If I’m headed to the lake
If I’m on a buffalo
In roller-skates
If I’m riding down the road
In a red Corvette
If I smell a cigar
Or a cigarette”
Langley reels off a few more wacky scenarios in which she finds herself thinking about her ex, such as when she's wearing roller-skates and - bizarrely - riding a buffalo.
Now, with all the speculation that continues to fizz around social media regarding the supposed love triangle between Langley, Green and Moroney, the reference to a “red Corvette” has some fans wondering if this is a nod to the car that appears on the ‘Choosin’ Texas’ artwork. That image is believed by many to be a subtle nod to the car Green and Moroney were spotted driving around in around the time he was rumoured to be dating Langley, even though that one wasn't red.
Similarly, Green is known for smoking cigars after his shows, so some have speculated that the “cigar” lyric is about him - but this feels more of a stretch, if we're being honest.
“Every random pair
Of Wrangler jeans
Every blonde hair
Blue eyed ten I see
Got me coming undone
Got a few screws loose
Damnit I gotta quit thinking
About you”
It's this “blonde hair blue-eyed ten I see ” line that has a lot of TikTok sleuths wondering if Langley is singing about Moroney here. Adding to the rumour mill is the fact that Langley pronounces “ten I see” in a way that sounds like she's saying “Tennessee”. A potential reference to Moroney's hit single, ‘Tennessee Orange’, perhaps?
“Quit thinking about your eyes
Quit thinking your arms
Quit thinking about the night
On your grandpa’s farm
And all the sweet nothings
Whispered in my ear
Oh how I wish your memory would disappear
Scram! Get! Get outta here now!”
Again, the “grandpa's farm” line has been interpreted by some as a reference to Green, given how he often sings about his beloved grandpas and he also owns a farm in Alabama.
It's very possible that fans online are simply reading a little too much into it. Either way, ‘I Gotta Quit’ is a hugely enjoyable and refreshingly light-hearted smash from Langley.
