When tequila was first discovered by Aztec Indians in 250-300 A.D, after they tried fermenting the juice of the blue agave plant for their ceremonial wine, they could never in their wildest dreams have imagined Luke Bryan singing about downing shots in a tiki bar.
But here we are, nearly 2000 years later, in Luke’s 32 Bridge, scrunching up our faces and licking salt off the back of our hands and accidentally squeezing lime in each other’s eyes.
Country singers have always loved a little tipple before toasting and if it’s not whiskey they’re drinking, then it’s probably tequila.
It was way back in 1955 that Jim Reeves sang about the wonders of the distilled liquor and returning from a trip down to Cafe El Gusto in Juarez to lighten his worries and tease Spanish dancing girls.
Since then everyone from Jimmy Buffett to Miranda Lambert has been singing tequila’s praises. Country singers like Midland, Toby Keith, Thomas Rhett and George Strait love it so much they’ve even got their own brands of tequila.
After all, when it comes to heartache and tragedy, country music certainly throws up a lot of questions and while tequila may not be the answer, it’s definitely worth a shot!
