Ella Langley - 'weren't for the wind'

Label: SAWGOD Records / Columbia

Release Date: October 4th, 2024

Album: still hungover

Songwriters: Ella Langley, Johnny Clawson & Joybeth Taylor

Producer: Will Bundy

The Background:

In the last year or so, Ella Langley has found her way to becoming one of the most exciting up-and-comers in country music.

Though one could argue the hype started with 2023's Excuse the Mess, which saw a phenomenal collab with country-rocker Koe Wetzel on 'That's Why We Fight,' what really solidified her as a top contender for breakout artist of 2024 was 'you look like you love me,' her viral duet with Riley Green. Arriving in June, the blockbuster single has turned Langley into a household name, only bolstered by their follow-up collaboration, 'Don't Mind If I Do.'

However, once you look past the viral moments and big time duets, you'll find that Langley has been offering up country gold in between it all, as well, as shown on her 2024 record, hungover. The 14-song collection features a number of instant fan-favorites like 'nicotine,' 'better be tough,' 'paint the town blue' and the pleading title track, yet Langley still has a few more tricks up her sleeve.

With a deluxe version in toe, dubbed still hungover, the Alabama native is issuing another five tracks to complete the project, including the moody rambler, 'weren't for the wind.'

The Sound:

Produced by trusty collaborator and revered creative, Will Bundy, 'weren't for the wind' takes the form of a cinematic ballad as the singer laments on her rolling stone tendencies.

The song, which was written by Langley alongside Johnny Clawson and Joybeth Taylor, finds the 'you look like you love me' crooner in a comfortable yet impressive vocal range as she leisurely opines on her rambling ways.

At just over three minutes, her southern drawl is as pleasing to the ear as ever as a moody pedal steel sets the tone from the opening seconds.

The Meaning:

"I wouldn't paint me as a heartbreaker
But I've said a few goodbyes
I'd make a promise but I know later
I'm bound to change my mind
Depending on the weather, I'm goin'
Hell, baby, nobody knows when
Yeah, if it was a different time
Might've been different in a different life"

The tune begins with our narrator i’mna moment of introspection, taking stock of who she is and her habits, most notably that she wouldn't classify herself as a "heartbreaker," though she's had to cut off a few relationships in the past.

Continuing to take inventory, she explains that she's not really one to keep her promises, often changing her mind with the change of the wind. While she somewhat takes ownership of this, she ends up kind of shrugging it off in a "it is what it is" way, noting that maybe in another life things would be different and setting up the rest of the song.

"Maybe that plane wouldn't ever take off
Maybe that dust wouldn't fly off the drive
Maybe that tumbleweed and me
Wouldn't leave every other sunrise
Maybe I'd settle down, dig in some roots
Find me a farmhouse, find me you
Maybe I wouldn't be already gone again
If it weren't for the wind"

Looking through the lens of what could've been different, she essentially explains that if circumstances were different, maybe she wouldn't have run away from someone who actually cares for her.

She's a tumbleweed, a rolling stone, a rambling woman or whatever other adage you prefer, unable to settle down and always chasing the next thing. Yet, she imagines that maybe in a different life or at a different time, she would set down roots with her ex-flame and be able to build a life.

But, alas, the wind is always going to blow and take her with it.

"I wouldn't stay wonderin' what's out there
I wouldn't saddle up on a breeze
I wouldn't disappear out of thin air
I could put down these wings"

Still dreaming of how things could be instead of how they are, Langley sings that maybe she wouldn't have this unquenchable curiosity to see and experience more, instead content with what's in front of her.

We're left thinking that maybe she wants this after all, as she talks about being able to "put down [her] wings" and feel at peace rather than yearning for the next thought or high to chase.

"Blowin', carryin' me to the wide open
White lines rollin' and the tires smokin'
It wouldn't be the rearview I'm lookin' in
If it weren't for the wind
If it weren't for the wind"
