Shortly after dropping her widely celebrated debut full-length album, That Ain't No Man, That's The Devil, Jessie Murph started teasing a brand new track, ‘Sip’, via socials.
During the opening of her Fall 2024 tour, the genre-blending prodigy began sharing longer snippets of ’Sip’ during the VIP soundcheck portion before her live shows, and later in October, Murph incorporated into the swaggering track into her setlist.
It didn't take long for ‘Sip’ to go viral across TikTok, with fans taking notice of one particularly eye-catching line, “Something about the way that he stands / With a Roscoe in his waistband, I love it”. Jessie Murph then created a number of videos poking fun at followers for not understanding the meaning behind the gun-related imagery - but don't fret, we've unpacked all the key lyrics for Murph's ‘Sip’ below.
That Ain't No Man, That's The Devil is pervaded by a dark, stormy feel, with much of the record finding Jessie Murph navigating the fresh wounds of a break-up. On ‘Sip’, we see Murph exploring a more confident persona, with the ‘Someone in This Room’ singer-songwriter delivering serpentine vocal riffs across a dramatic instrumental.
The emphatic strings combine with a moody drum pattern that feels reminiscent of The Weeknd's hedonistic Beauty Behind the Madness era, with the sensual, atmospheric ambience that builds throughout ‘Sip’ accentuated by Murph's reverb-laden ad-libs.
“I've been up and at it all night
With a cold drink and a tall guy
I'm fading now
Stumbled out into the moonlight
And I drop down for the first time
I'm fading now, hmm-mm”
‘Sip’ revolves around an alcohol-fuelled romantic encounter, with the protagonist beginning the track by sharing how she's been dancing for someone all night long. The narrator doesn't go into details when describing her lover's traits, painting him as ‘tall’, which adds to the sense that this is a purely physical encounter.
“I been sipping on it, sipping on him
I got nothing else to do
Dancing on, romancing on it
I got nothing else to do
I'm sipping on a boy, sipping on a boy
Sipping on a boy, ooh-ooh
I'm sipping on a boy, sipping on a boy
Say he like the way I move”
The protagonist outlines how she's been sipping on her drink for hours, before making a clever transition to ‘sipping on him’, conveying how she's been tangled up with the man. ‘Sip’ is pervaded by sexual undertones, with the narrator again consolidating the feeling that this isn't an especially loving encounter, as she admits she's only spending time with the man because “I got nothing else to do”.
“Something about the way that he stands
With a Roscoe in his waistband, I love it (I love it)
Something 'bout the way that those hands
Make a bitch dance for a bad man, I love it
Hmm”
These are the notorious lines that Jessie Murph has been teasing fans with during the lead-up to ‘Sip’s release, with the Nashville native repeatedly joking that they haven't cottoned onto the real meaning of the lyrics, “Something about the way that he stands / With a Roscoe in his waistband, I love it”. A ‘Roscoe’ is a slang term for a pistol, and the single artwork for ‘Sip’ gives you an idea as to how Murph envisions this being slotted into his jeans. As well as conveying a sense of danger surrounding the man, this line could also be interpreted as an innuendo, due to the outline created by the gun being nestled in the front of his pants.
In the lead-up to the release date of ‘Sip’, Jessie Murph shared a number of snippets of the song via TikTok, as well as incorporating it into her setlist in October 2024. The day before its arrival, Murph teased “5000 comments and i drop it [tomorrow]”.
Elsewhere on her socials, the fast-emerging artist has been poking fun at how many of her listeners have not clocked the intended meaning of the ‘Roscoe in his waistband’ lyric.
