Chris Stapleton - 'Mountains of My Mind'

Label: Mercury Nashville

Release Date: 10th November 2023

Album: Higher

Producers: Dave Cobb, Chris Stapleton & Morgane Stapleton

Songwriters: Chris Stapleton

The Background:

The final song on Stapleton's 2023 album Higher, 'Mountains of My Mind' is a certified tear-jerker, exploring life's emotional struggles and hardships, particularly in regards to mental health.

A soft, gentle and deeply soulful album closer, 'Mountains of My Mind' captures Stapleton yearning for salvation and addressing his inner troubles throughout the song's candid narrative.

The Sound:

'Mountains of My Mind' is a solo song, featuring Stapleton on vocals and acoustic guitar. A poignant and gently strummed track, his vocals are at their most delicate, conveying the vulnerability of the song's lyrics.

The Meaning:

There's a destination, I've gotta wait to go
There's a revelation that I might never know
Somewhere salvation is waitin' down the road

It's clear to Stapleton that there is a place absent of anxieties and struggles, but he's not yet reached it. He's understanding of the fact patience is required.

So, I think I'll find a long white line
Curse the world and leave it all behind
I've been tryin' all this time
I still can't climb the mountains of my mind

Stapleton suggests hitting the road to get as far away from his problems as possible; the white line indicating the markings of the highway.

There's a testimony, that no one's ever heard
There's circumstances that none of us deserve
No rhyme or reason waiting 'round the curve

Think I'll find a long whitе line
Curse the world and lеave it all behind
I've been tryin' all this time
I still can't climb the mountains of my mind

There's an empty table with a well-worn wooden chair
Just waiting for me in the middle of nowhere
Where no one knows me, where no one even cares

This final verse could suggest a desire to be out of the limelight and away from the public speculation that comes hand in hand with fame. Isolation is often at the heart of many problems, but for those who live with a level of celebrity, it's something that becomes craved.

So, I think I'll find a long white line
Curse the world and leave it all behind

I've been trying all the time and I still can't climb the mountains of my mind

Yes I've been trying all the time and I still can't climb the mountains of my mind

Don't worry I'll be fine, but I still can't climb the mountains of my mind

What has Chris Stapleton said about ‘Mountains of My Mind’?

Speaking to Apple Music, Stapleton shared that "‘Mountains of my Mind’ is one I wrote by myself, and my wife was just bawling in the control room the whole time I was playing it. I just woke up one morning and wrote that one. There’s some of that 'not being able to get through the day’ sometimes. I think everybody has those days."
