With his new studio album, Own Worst Enemy, finally out, fans are getting a closer, more revealing, look at the artist, Gavin Adcock.
The album, which arrived on Aug. 15, is a 24-track collection of all that Adcock has become and all that he has learned on his meteoric rise to country stardom. Few of the record’s songs are as vulnerable as ‘Graveyard,’ a haunting country-rock opus about the skeletons we keep in our closets.
Of Own Worst Enemy, the artist has explained, “Over the last 4 years I’ve spent my life writing, traveling, and trying to find time to breathe. It doesn’t always add up on paper like it would seem, but through the happiness, hard times and self destruction I’ve found the best part of my job is letting out music for my fans. I can’t thank y’all enough for sticking with me for this long. I’m the furthest thing from perfect and I don’t ever plan to be."
Here, we're examining just how perfectly imperfect the rising star truly is.
Fitted with the clear resonance of early aughts alt-rock and the brazen twang of mainstream country, ‘Graveyard’ has a throwback feel, a bygone air blustering through the arrangement just as it rattles the bones of Adcock’s past. Blistering tom hits and a domineering guitar texture the tune as the artist sings of a history that always seems to catch up with him in the end.
"Secondhand high, set of green eyes
Wondering when I'm coming down
Pull me in close, baby you know
How to make me stick around"
Throughout ‘Graveyard’, Adcock is smitten, hung up on someone who makes him feel grounded while he’s out on the road and has him thinking that maybe he’ll be willing and able to stick around this time. He, however, knows himself better than that.
While the song starts off with a lovely image of love and affection, it soon fades with the lines:“If you look into my past / You'll see this won't last / My skeletons will get you gone / Chill your bones..."
"I got a graveyard, been known to break hearts
Like it's my damn day job
I got a headstone to carve your name on
If you wanna take it this far
Don't tell me you didn't have no warning
You wake up and I'm gone in the morning
I just couldn't rest in peace
Cause I got a graveyard"
Adcock puts it plainly in the chorus, letting it be known that he’s a certified heartbreaker, someone used to loving and leaving.
If this new romantic partner wants to give him a chance, they need to be aware from the start just what lies in his past and just how many skeletons reside in his closet.
"Yeah I got a graveyard
I got a graveyard"
Secondhand high, set of green eyes
Wondering when I'm coming down
Pull me in close, baby you know
How to make me stick around
I'm so used to being on the road
Never have a hand to hold
You make me wanna hold on
But if you look into my past
You'll see this won't last
My skeletons will get you gone
Chill your bones
I got a graveyard, been known to break hearts
Like it's my damn day job
I got a headstone to carve your name on
If you wanna take it this far
Don't tell me you didn't have no warning
You wake up and I'm gone in the morning
I just couldn't rest in peace
Cause I got a graveyard
Secondhand low, thought you should know
I'm as miserable as you
We had it real good, dig it up if I could
But I just can't break through these roots
I got a graveyard, been known to break hearts
Like it's my damn day job
I got a headstone to carve your name on
If you wanna take it this far
Don't tell me you didn't have no warning
You wake up and I'm gone in the morning
I just couldn't rest in peace
Cause I got a graveyard
I got a graveyard, been known to break hearts
Like it's my damn day job
I got a headstone to carve your name on
If you wanna take it this far
Don't tell me you didn't have no warning
You wake up and I'm gone in the morning
I just couldn't rest in peace
Cause I got a graveyard
I got a graveyard
Yeah I got a graveyard
I got a graveyard
