Ty Myers - ‘Firefly’

Release Date: January 24th, 2025

Album: The Select

Songwriters: Ty Myers

Producers: Brandon Hood

The Background:

In a music ecosystem that seemingly drops new viral artists out of thin air every few weeks, Ty Myers proves that he's more than just a moment or a flash in the pan.

Paving the way with his sensational debut single, 'Tie That Binds,' in 2023, the 17-year-old has taken stride after stride since, all leading to his debut album, The Select.

Featuring 16 songs, some written as far back as a decade ago, The Select serves as a soothing introduction to the genre-blending talent, whose 'Ends of the Earth' has been inundating country radio and social media since its release in October 2024.

Throughout the debut project, listeners will find no shortage of breezy jammers, bluesy ballads and Texas dancehall spunk, all done with elegance. Yet, around the midpoint of the album is where we find Myers at his most vulnerable as he sings of newfound love and enchantment on 'Firefly.'

The Sound:

Of The Select's 16 tracks, most of them were written solely by the young talent that sings them, including 'Firefly.'

Chronicling the enchantment of young love, the tune keeps it simple and sweet across its nearly four-minute runtime, utilizing a warm and rich electric guitar that reverberates across the track as Myers' strong and steady voice pierces through.

Slow-tolling and utterly serene, you almost find yourself falling in love to the song, too.

The Meaning:

The sun goes down at night
The land is filled with moonlight
That’s when you appear

You can feel a change in the air
Everybody’s on the edge of their chair
When you walk in the room

Setting the scene, Myers sings of a dark and desolate night that's intrinsically changed by his beloved.

Noting that there's an obvious change in the air whenever she comes around, it's a feeling that seems to be shared by anyone they're around as she turns heads everywhere she goes and people can't help but be enamored by her, especially Myers.

I find peace in knowing you’re mine
I can see the auburn glow in your eye
Baby you’re a firefly

You’re flying across the room
Everybody’s watching you, but you’re in your own world
You come up and you ask to dance
You grab me by my hand and lead me to the floor

Explaining his pride and joy in being connected to her, he compares his partner to a firefly, sharing her light everywhere she goes.

Building on the point in the section above, people are drawn to her but she doesn't seem to notice as she's so lost in her own world. Pulling him onto the dance floor, you can almost feel the light and confidence she gives off as she blocks out everyone else and only focuses on Myers.

Don’t think I’ve ever been this high
I’m drowning in your flickering light
Baby you’re a firefly

You know what you’re doing, you don’t have to lie
You got me all confused in the mind
You light up the room like a thousand little stars in the sky
Baby you’re a firefly

Comparing her love to a high that he's never felt before, he explains that her love is utterly intoxicating and he has a feeling she knows it.

Taking up all of his thoughts and feelings, he's overwhelmed with his feelings for her and the abundance of love and care he has for this girl.

"We smile at each other when the song ends
We both know where this is going, young is the night
Flash forward to the bedroom
I don’t know if I’ve told you, but girl, you’re quite a sight
You’re my only spark in the darkest of nights
And your beam radiates so bright
Baby you’re a firefly"

After their moment on the dance floor, he mentions that their night is by no means over just yet as they take the party on home for just the two of them.

Bringing attention to her beauty and radiance, he riddles her with compliments and tries to explain just how much he loves her even though he doesn't have the words.

"Baby you’re a firefly
Baby you’re a firefly
Baby you’re a firefly"

What has Myers said about ‘Firefly’?

Myers hasn't shared much specifically when it comes to 'Firefly,' but prior to his album's release on January 24, he gave Holler an inside look into the creative process behind The Select, as well as his influences and inspirations.

"It's a culmination of everything since I started. That's kind of how all first albums are, I guess, but I started writing when I was around six or seven and have been writing ever since," Myers explained. "I've had the opportunity to choose songs from way back then, songs I wrote a couple years ago and some songs I wrote the day before I recorded it."

He continued: "I think what I've done with this album is try to pull from all of the influences that I've garnered over the years. My first love was old country when I was little bitty, because that's just what we listened to. Then my mom introduced me to more soul and blues stuff, which was a huge influence on this album. Obviously, I'm young and I listen to R&B and rap sometimes. I'm not sure how much that has to do with my sound, but I'm sure it's influenced it in some way, shape or form," he added with a laugh.
