The Background:

Since 2021's release of Dangerous: The Double Album, Morgan Wallen has been on the fast track to country music superstardom.

Bolstered by 2023's standout record, One Thing At A Time, the Tennessee native has become the biggest name in the format, even infiltrating across genre lines and landing singles atop the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

After a little over two years, the award-winning entertainer has finally arrived with a new batch of music in the form of his 37-track opus, I'm the Problem. Sprawling with his next era of record-breaking hits and beloved fan-favorites, the album welcomes some of his most poignant work to date.

Included in the mix is 'Falling Apart', a heartbroken ballad that joins his growing repertoire of emotive tunes.

The Sound:

'Falling Apart' features a stark arrangement. Much of the song is wrapped up in a blanket of moaning steel and ambient strings, creating a cavernous sound that lends to the overall mood of the despondent song. The arrangement is powerful in its simplicity, with the ability to tell the song's story all on its own.

The Meaning:

"I’ve been sleeping on the couch if you wanna call it sleep
Every square inch of this house is messy as you left me
Between the sour mash and the barley and all the bottles in the trash
You’d think I’m a living party but girl you’re the life of that"

'Falling Apart' is a breakup ballad, one that finds Wallen heartbroken. The tune recounts sleepless nights and drunken attempts to overcome such heartache to little or no avail. In the beginning, a truly desperate scene is set.

As the song continues, though, we come to learn that he's the perpetrator, the very reason for his own pain.

"Turns out I needed you
And the leaving you wasn’t half as smart as I thought it was
‘Cause my life’s in pieces now
And I’m seeing how what we had was ‘bout as good as it comes
And now I know better ‘cause without your arms
To hold me together baby I’m falling apart
Baby I’m falling apart"

In turns out, he is the one who ended things with his lover, seeking his freedom and believing that the grass was greener on the single side of life. He finds out fairly quickly that is not the case and he's left to deal with the mess he's made.

He finds himself falling apart without his better half, knowing full well that he's the only one to blame.

"Sold us out to buy my freedom, and baby now I’m paying the price
I swore I had a list of reasons but that’s a list that I can’t find
If I’d have built my life around you, I coulda built it to the sky
Swore that I could live without you but I’d die to have you back tonight"

By breaking things off, he believed he was doing what was best for him. He soon discovers the best thing for him was her.

He can't fully remember why he ended things, singing "I swore I had a list of reasons but that’s a list that I can’t find." All he knows now is that he wants his person back.

"I guess I signed up for the crashing down
I’m just waiting on the rest to happen now"

What has Morgan Wallen said about 'Falling Apart'?

As is often the case of late, the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter has so far remained tight-lipped on how the song came about.

However, when revealing the release date for I'm the Problem, Wallen provided fans with an insight into the theme of introspection that courses through the project as a whole.

“I have been a problem, for sure, and I've got no problem admitting that. But there are other sides to me as well," he explained. "I've spent the last 11 months really trying to figure out, 'Do I still want to be the problem? Is it time to move past that phase in my life? I think it probably is, and this might be the last time I get a chance to honestly say it.”
