Dasha - 'Didn't I'

Label: Warner Records

Release Date: July 12th, 2024

Album: TBA

Songwriters: Dasha, Ben Johnson & Emily Weisband

Producer: Ben Johnson

The Background:

When Dasha appeared nearly out of thin air with her country line dance anthem, 'Austin,' several naysayers were quick to dismiss her as a one hit wonder, drawing the lines around what does and doesn't constitute as "country music."

After racking up billions of views and streams, entering the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, topping the UK Radio Country Airplay chart and finding herself on stages from Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the 2024 CMT Awards, to Nashville's Nissan Stadium and the Grand Ole Opry, Dasha has all but solidified her position at the forefront of the next generation of country hitmakers.

With her newest offering for her growing legion of fans, the simply infectious 'Didn't I,' she only compounds her staying power, proving in less than three minutes that she's a star who will only continue to rise from one release to the next.

Where 'Austin' served as a massive middle finger to her no good, heart breaking ex boyfriend, 'Didn't I' shows the other side of the same coin. Claiming that their toxic relationship is over and she's determined to leave him in the dust, the pair of star-crossed lovers continue to make excuses and come back to each other despite Dasha knowing that it's an idea best left alone... but where's the fun in that?

The Sound:

Written alongside Ben Johnson and Emily Weisband, both proven hitmakers in their own right, Johnson also takes the helm behind the soundboard, though as we'll learn in a little bit, 'Didn't I' came together quite serendipitously.

As Dasha counts us in to the push-and-pull breakup anthem, 'Didn't I' opens with a cheeky little banjo action as her crystal clear vocals ring through with chilling conviction.

With the addition of a steady drum and light instrumentation, it's a track that glistens and shines with all the right country elements, perfectly marrying fiddles, stomps and claps with layered vocals and isolated moments of pure brain-tingling bliss.

Finding the perfect moments where everything falls away and powerful kick drum thumps come in to fill the silence, it's a dizzying display of the best of country-pop, becoming an instant earworm as you find yourself humming along before you're even through the first listen.

It goes without saying that 'Didn't I' is going to be a hit in no time, checking all the boxes for becoming yet another blockbuster sensation for the burgeoning entertainer.

The Meaning:

"Didn’t I swear you were dead to me
Didn’t you scream that I had to leave
Didn’t I slam your damn front door
Saying I ain’t ever gonna come back no more
Didn’t you drag my name through town
Didn’t we take our pictures down
So why am I here with your lips on mine
Coulda sworn I said this was over
Didn’t I?"

Kicking off with the song's spitfire chorus, we find Dasha recounting all of the things she's said about this tragic love affair. Swearing that they were over and done as she walked out the door never to be seen again, she explains that her ex was on the same page, too.

Both agreeing that this toxic relationship was dead and gone, the script is quickly flipped as we find out that they've slid back into their old habits yet again.

Dasha is left questioning whether she said she was done with the back and forth or not as we get a glimpse into what led them into this vicious feedback loop.

"Good morning to me
Those are my jeans
On a floor I know so well
Don’t know what to think
What day of the week
All I know is what the hell
We’re backsliders
Bad liars
Waking up half drunk still tired
Setting everything we said on fire"

Waking up in his bed, Dasha is in a familiar position as she's come back under her ex's spell for the umpteenth time. Not knowing what to make of the situation or how they both managed to get here again, Dasha calls them both out on their shit, saying that they're "backsliders" and "bad liars" as they fall into the same old routine.

Almost like deja vu, it's like they're living in a real life Groundhog's Day as they go back on all the things they said, the promises they made and the threats they hurled at one another the day before.

"Said it was once
Then it was done
That we’d made our last mistake
That lasted a month
Now look at us
Lipsticks on your pillowcase
Backsliders
Bad liars
Getting good at walking that wire
Setting everything we said on fire"

Promising themselves that it was just a one time thing and then they would officially throw in the towel, it's a typical case of not knowing when to call it quits with a guy you really aren't meant to be with.

Notably about the same ex that we came to know so well in 'Austin,' they both keep repeating their same mistakes as they perfect the art of walking the thin line that separates being in a relationship and never seeing each other again.

"When we really gonna mean it
Honey when we say goodbye
Right now I just don’t believe it
Gotta make up our minds ‘cause"

Calling out the elephant in the room, Dasha pointedly asks when they're really going to commit to their split and come to terms with the fact that they're not good for each other.

Knowing that all of their past attempts at saying goodbye have been utterly futile, she puts all her cards out on the table as she calls for them to finally make up their minds on their future together.

"Didn’t I swear you were dead to me
Didn’t you scream that I had to leave
Didn’t I slam your damn front door
Saying I ain’t ever gonna come back no more
Didn’t you drag my name through town
Didn’t we take our pictures down
So why am I here with your lips on mine
Coulda sworn I said this was over
Didn’t I?"

What has Dasha said about 'Didn't I'?

Ahead of her coveted Grand Ole Opry debut, Dasha sat down with Holler to discuss some of her highlights from the last year and being ushered into the country music family, as well as the making of her newest infectious offering.

"I wrote it on the first day I met Ben Johnson and Emily Weisband," she shared with Holler. "It was my second session of the day and we ended up chatting for hours and hours. A tornado warning started and we were deep in Franklin. If we wanted to make it home before the tornados hit, we needed to leave by 7pm. It was 6:10 so we said, 'Okay, so we have 50 minutes to write a song!'"

Taking us through the spur of the moment songwriting process, she continued: "We wrote the entire song and kind of free styled the chorus and the melody. We wrote it in literally 30 minutes and the vocal you hear was the one take I did before we got out of there. Not a single other vocal was recorded, that's basically the demo that we walked out with.

"Songs like that are so rare but so special because that's when you're not overthinking anything. It's just pure talent and intuition," she explained, gushing with excitement over the finished project that we now know as 'Didn't I.' "I wish every session was like that!"
