Lainey Wilson - 'Call A Cowboy'

Label: BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville

Release Date: August 23rd, 2024

Album: Whirlwind

Songwriters: Lainey Wilson, Trannie Anderson & Dallas Wilson

Producer: Jay Joyce

The Background:

Lainey Wilson has placated fans with a smattering of singles, such as ‘Country’s Cool Again’ and ‘Hang Tight Honey’, for long enough. Now, that her highly-anticipated Whirlwind is finally here, we're getting swept up in the album's 14 tracks, taking a closer look at and listen to the star's latest offerings.

In each new batch of songs from the 'Watermelon Moonshine' hitmaker, there always seems to be a few great ballads and loved-up ditties that perfectly showcase the artist's trademark charm. One of Whirlwind's most affecting is 'Call A Cowboy.'

A powerhouse number about a stud in a Stetson, 'Call A Cowboy' is one of Wilson's most head-over-boots offerings to date.

The Sound:

Punctuated by Wild West warbles and dust-laden rhythms, 'Call A Cowboy' comes fitted with a faultless composition, one that perfectly mirrors the brawny buckaroo Wilson belts about. It's all sturdy beats and steady-handed strings as the artist sings of a man we can all depend on.

The Meaning:

"If there’s a job that needs done
Or a horse to be broke
If there’s a drink that needs drunk
Or a red that needs smoked
Call a cowboy
If there’s some boots to be scuffed
Or pearls to get snapped
You need a four wheel drive truck
With a chain on the back
Call a cowboy"

If you got bugs, call an exterminator. Got ghosts? That's a job for the Ghostbusters. But Lainey Wilson says if you need yourself a reliable mans, call 1-800-COWBOY.

If there's work to be done and a heart that needs a home, the artist knows no better person for the job.

"You best be banking on him hanging on for more than 8 seconds
He’s rock steady loaded locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He’s red white and blue
Tried and true like the grit in his voice
That’s what you call a cowboy"

Against an arrangement as steady as the kind of man she's singing about, Wilson offers up a little advice: once you find yourself said cowboy, hang onto him. Apparently, there is no one who will be truer, sturdier, more dependable.

She explains that "If there’s a door to be held / A wildflower to be picked / If there’s a fire to be felt / In a straight whiskey kiss..." you need to pick up the phone and dial.

Toward the song's close, it becomes evident she's singing from experience, having found her own cowboy and hung on to him for dear life.

"You best be banking on him hanging on for more than 8 seconds
He’s rock steady loaded locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He’s red white and blue
Tried and true like the grit in his voice
That’s what I call my cowboy"

What has Lainey Wilson said about 'Call A Cowboy'?

While nothing has been shared specifically about 'Call A Cowboy,' Wilson has been open about the fact that this new project has been a major source of solace and self-discovery over the last few years as she's seen her life completely change while her career has skyrocketed.

Weaving together the highs, lows and in-betweens that she's experienced along the way, her signature storytelling is front and center across the project, which she explains has been in the works essentially since the release of Bell Bottom Country in October of 2022.

“This album has been a long time coming, and I can’t wait for the world to have this body of work in their hands soon,” Wilson noted when announcing the highly-anticipated project. “This new chapter of music is the most cathartic and personal piece of art I’ve ever made. I hope this record brings some peace to your whirlwind and wraps its arms around you like it did for me.”

Expanding on these sentiments, the decorated entertainer also added: "Writing & recording these 14 songs over the past couple of years has helped me stay grounded in ways you’d never believe. This album brought me back to my roots and made me feel at home during times when I couldn’t have been further away and my biggest hope is that it gives you that same sense of comfort that it has for me."

He’s red white and blue
Tried and true like the grit in his voice
That’s what you call a cowboy

Oh hey lucky me
When I’m a long long ways from home
I get to call him my own

You best be banking on him hanging on for more than 8 seconds
He’s rock steady loaded locked and ready
Boots to his Stetson
He’s red white and blue
Tried and true like the grit in his voice
That’s what I call my cowboy
