Megan Moroney - ‘Break It Right Back’

Label: Sony Music Nashville

Release Date: October 4, 2024

Album: Am I Okay? (I'll Be Fine)

Songwriters: Ben Williams, David ‘Messy’ Mescon, Megan Moroney & Rob Hatch

Producer: Kristian Bush

The Background:

Arriving in early October as part of Megan Moroney's 2024 deluxe project, Am I Okay? (I'll Be Fine), alongside the long-teased fan-favourite ‘Bless Your Heart’ and ‘I'll Be Fine’, ‘Break It Right Back’ finds the Georgia singer-songwriter delving into a recent break-up.

On ‘Break It Right Back’, the dismissive nods to her ex's ‘big fancy job’ ties in with the easter egg reference to the phrase ‘Bye Finance Bro’ in Moroney's ‘Indifferent’ lyric video.

The Sound:

Megan Moroney's distinctive vocals glide across an angsty, dramatic sea of electric guitars and stormy drums, accentuating the frustration that underpins ‘Break It Right Back’. It's one of the more uptempo offerings on the I'll Be Fine deluxe project, and feels cut from the same cloth as Moroney's fierce, defiant 2024 single, ‘Indifferent’.

The Meaning:

“Dressed to the nines, perfect blue eyes
I looked around, not a red flag in sight
My daddy liked you, and that was a first
You promised him you'd be the guy I deserve

Oh, too good to be true
Oh, we were wrong about you”

The overly slick appearance of the ex in this story is a recurring theme, lulling the protagonist into a false sense of security. The narrator explains how her father approved of her old flame, despite usually being skeptical of her choice in men, again adding to the reassurance that this seems to be a relationship worth pursuing. However, we get a sense of foreboding here with the line, “we were wrong about you”.

“You weren't supposed to be just like the rest
You swore up and down that, you loved me to death
Now we're in my driveway, and I'm now your ex
'Cause I'm way too much, and you need something less
Oh, why does this happen every time?
What's wrong with me? Am I that bad?
You felt like you had to take my broken heart and fix it
Just to turn around, turn around
And break it right back, break it right back”

After the various instances of heartbreak and disappointing partners scattered throughout Megan Moroney's discography, there was a strong - if brief - feeling that this partner might be different. The protagonist outlines how he ended up letting her down, blaming her for being “too much”, which causes her to worry she's the problem.

“You knew my past and begged me to try
To love again, because it'd end different this time
But words are just words, and you're just a guy
And I'm just the girl you looked at like a prize”

Here, the narrator stresses that her ex was well aware of her track record of difficult relationships, but nonetheless promised her things would work out if she trusted him. Ultimately, though, as the titular lyric underlines, he only fixed her heart temporarily, before promptly breaking it again. She laments how he viewed her as a trophy, one of the many reasons why he ended up being the wrong person for her.

“So go use your fancy big words at your fancy big job
Tell your friends how you're right and how I'm just so wrong
And how you do it all, and I don't do enough
How you can't settle down with a girl that lives on a tour bus”

The phrases “fancy big words” and “fancy big job” consolidate the sense that the partner was from a different world to the protagonist, who spends her weekends out on the road. She emphasises how she's sure he'll be twisting the narrative and telling his friends he was in the right during the break-up, and our narrator was at fault.

What has Megan Moroney said about ‘I'll Be Fine’?

In the lead-up to dropping Am I Okay? (I'll Be Fine), Megan Moroney gave fans an explanation as to the inspiration behind each of the three new tracks. She reflected, “The love songs that start the album were short-lived and this song explains why”.
