Rissi Palmer welcomed Cam, Maren Morris and Andrea Williams onto her Apple Music radio show ‘Color Me Country’ for a panel discussion this past Sunday (2/14).

Palmer began the show by saying “This week in Country music, we were forced to address the Elephant in the room - race”. Palmer then discussed the struggles she faced in the industry and why she felt she had to leave Nashville. Her guests, including journalist Andrea Williams and artists Maren Morris and Cam, discussed how hard it is for black artists to get recognised and respected within the country genre and the influence they have had on the history of country music. Palmer stated, “I chose these people because they are big voices in a sea of closed mouths and empty gestures”.

Morris spoke about her acceptance speech upon winning the CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the year, in which she gave thanks and recognition to black women who had inspired her within the genre - including Rissi Palmer, Mickey Guyton and Linda Martell. “So much of Black history in this country has been so whitewashed, I just thought, you know what? Whose name can you put in this that will drive people to go to their Spotifys, go to their Apple Musics, go to their socials and actually go and listen to some new music for a change, after a three-hour show awarding the same white people the same shit”.

The episode, which was entitled ‘How To Be An Ally’, concluded with Cam and Morris discussing their roles in the problem and the solution; Morris states “Like I said, embarrassingly late, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I feel like we all should be uncomfortable. The nature of change, is being uncomfortable. It's breaking out of something that has worked for very few for far too long”.
