It might sound greedy to be calling for more music from Zach Bryan, when the ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker has just released a 25-song album and an acoustic companion project, featuring stripped-back renditions of every track on the original record.
But as we continue to digest and dissect With Heaven On Top, we can't help but wonder what Bryan's plans are for his long-teased visual album, The American Underbelly.
Last August, the Oklahoma native shared what seem to be a trio of music video snippets for ‘Punch Drunk Jersey’, ‘Fifty Four Years’ and ‘Rockaway’. Bryan accompanied each clip by confirming these were part of a ten-video project, The American Underbelly.
Each one is an atmospheric vignette that brings the song to life, with ‘Punk Drunk Jersey’ featuring a jarring portrait of a man in black-and-white talking to the camera, while ‘Fifty Four Years’ pivots around an elderly couple, with the wife regaling viewers with their bittersweet love-story, which has lately been hampered by dementia.
The last of the three clips, ‘Rockaway’, follows a young woman who has moved to the city, chatting on the phone to an old friend, and detailing her life since leaving her hometown.
It seems The American Underbelly is distinct from another of Bryan's mysterious, long-teased projects, Motorbreath, which is a documentary following the creation of the ‘I Remember Everything’ singer-songwriter's latest studio album.
At the time, that project was billed as his final major-label record, but since then, Bryan has signed a lucrative deal with Warner Records, which will see the release of at least two more albums. The title was then changed from Motorbreath to With Heaven On Top, and it's unclear whether the documentary - which was narrated by Bryan's friend, Matthew McConaughey - will ever see the light of day.
While we're unsure as to the status of the Motorbreath film, we suspect The American Underbelly is still set to be released at some point in the coming months. None of the three songs Bryan teased from The American Underbelly featured on With Heaven On Top, which suggests he's holding them back for their own project.
What's more, the three videos already feel as though they've been through post-production, with ‘Punk Drunk Jersey’, ‘Fifty Four Years’ and ‘Rockaway’ all complete and polished.
With the acoustic version of With Heaven On Top having only been released today (Monday, January 12th 2026), we're not expecting to hear or see The American Underbelly any time soon. But it's nonetheless a project we're keenly looking forward to, especially given how evocative and cinematic Bryan's previous music videos have been. We're hoping all ten visuals are ready to roll, and that we'll be able to enjoy them before Bryan kicks off his With Heaven On Top Tour in March...
