Hillary Clinton, Miss Piggy, Kathy Griffin, Leslie Knope, Lindy West, even Dora the Explorer. Where would we be without loud mouth women?
That's exactly what everybody's favourite coastal cowgirl is wondering on her brand new single as she admits to coming from long line of loud mouth women herself and pays tribute to those women who turned themselves up to 11 to pave the way for women everywhere to speak up.
"I come from a line of loud mouth women who ain't afraid to speak their minds," she sings, as her honky tonk band swishes and sways breezily along with her. "So if you wanna get along when we tell you that you're wrong / You're gonna wanna get it right / It's like scratching an itch / sometimes we gotta bitch when it's quiet on the Western front / Stirring up trouble / Bursting all your bubbles / Holding onto smokin' guns."
Make no mistake about it, being loud and being a woman is always about more than volume. Being a loud mouth woman is about being unashamed. It's about being confident, assertive, fearless and proud. It's about putting the caps lock on a demanding to be understood. When society wants women to be quiet, it’s not because being loud is inherently bad, it's because it doesn't want to hear what women have to say. It wants them to be as small and quiet and compliant as possible.
Whether it was Natalie Maines and Margo Price or Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, country music has always had a long history of outspoken women being told to "shut up and sing" every time they spoke out and spoke up. Sometimes, the only way to make an impact as a woman is to be a loud mouth one, whatever the consequences might be.
"When the going gets rough you can count on us to step up to the plate / We've taken the vow and we're plenty proud to speak for those who can't," she sings, reminding us all along the way how it's often been women historically who have spoken out to lift up other neglected voices.
"This song is so special to me," Emily Zeck shared. "I feel like it connects me to all of the strong-willed women that came before me, and the women all over the world who will listen and resonate with this. It was so fun bringing my vision to life with the music video, and it turned out just as uncomfy and odd as I wanted it to. Here’s to all the women who ain’t afraid to say something when they see something. Cheers!"
Directed by Chad Crawford & chuckmylord, in the video for 'Loud Mouth Women' Emily Zeck finds herself trapped in her own light-heartedly dystopian 1960s housewife nightmare as she cares for her very own mannequin cowboy, spoon feeding him, rubbing his feet and hula dancing for him before putting him to bed.
