If Holler had a Hall of Fame, then a gigantic bronze plaque to Emily Nenni would take pride of place in it. Sadly, we don’t really have the budget for that right now, but she does still hold a very special place in our honky tonk loving hearts and we’ve been waiting way too long for her to fly over to London to come and see us!
Bay Area born and raised, the Nashville-based singer-songwriter cut her country chops with endless sets at Robert’s Western World and the smoky double-wide trailer of Santa’s Pub, and now she’s launching her European tour this evening all the way over the other side of the world in Gothenburg, Sweden.
To celebrate she’s given us some tantalising BTS from her legendary live show with an exclusive premiere of her brand new video for ‘Amarillo Highway,’ filmed at Sagebrush and directed by Natalie Rhea.
“I learned this song from Luke Bell, who was learning the words on a drive back from Wyoming about ten years ago,” Nenni said of the track, which closes her recently released album Drive & Cry. “I then listened to it on repeat on a drive to West Texas. I truly couldn’t get enough of it, or Terry Allen’s Lubbock (on everything) record in general. I have always had such appreciation for Texan songwriters like Terry Allen, and the Texas honky tonk scene.”
“I started playing it at Santa’s Pub in Nashville on Sunday nights, and it’s always a crowd favorite! The recording we got has two of Santa’s Ice Cold Pickers on it, Steve Daly and Mike Daly, also known as ‘The Daly Double.’ Thanks to them, and all of the band having a ball in the studio playing this live, you get a feel for the good time honky tonk we have in that double wide trailer with our friends. Long live Santa’s Pub and Terry Allen!”
“Sagebrush, much like the White Horse in Austin, Texas, has always welcomed us non-Texan honky tonkers with open arms,” she says of the honky tonk in Texas where the video was filmed. “All I ever want is to play for a room full of two-steppers! It makes me so happy and misty-eyed when I look out and see folks having fun on the dance floor. That’s what inspires me to write the music I write and choose a cover like ‘Amarillo Highway.’”
Backed up and supported on all of her upcoming dates by one of Nashville’s finest, cosmic country funkiest, shit-kicking honky tonk bands operating anywhere on this planet right now, Teddy and The Rough Riders, Emily Nenni will be setting off on an 18-date trek which takes in Stockholm, Hamburg, London, Cardiff, and more, and will culminate in an appearance at the Eldorado Americana Festival in Vancé, France.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, Nenni has also announced a week-long support tour with Orville Peck, which features a 2-night stand at Los Angeles’ legendary Hollywood Palladium. On October 13th, she will make her debut appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, TX. Check out the tour dates below.
