Charley Crockett has made a surprise appearance in Netflix's viral new Western-inspired series, Ransom Canyon, with the ‘$10 Cowboy’ crooner performing two tracks.
When one of the co-stars, Quinn O’Grady, celebrates renovating the town's beloved dance-hall, Gracies, Charley Crockett is booked as the entertainment for its grand reopening.
Charley Crockett's name can be spotted in the event posters in the lead-up to the concert, hinting at the Texas native's impending appearance. Nonetheless, Crockett's performance still comes as an unexpected twist, particularly given the ‘Solitary Road’ singer-songwriter's staunchly anti-establishment and anti-commercial reputation.
Perhaps Crockett's approach has softened slightly after signing his first major label deal with Island earlier in the year. Either way, it's a welcome treat to be able to enjoy some of the traditional-leaning hitmaker's stellar music during Netflix's new show.
Crockett performs ‘Spade’ and ‘I Need Your Love’, with the enigmatic artist introducing the latter with the tongue-in-cheek quip, “People always ask me, they say, ‘Charley, what's that song about?’ Well, I tell them the truth. It's about two or three minutes”.
He then instructs his band, “Alright boys, let's slow it down”, which paves the way for a romantic moment between Quinn and her love interest, the brooding Staten Kirkland.
Minka Kelly, who plays Quinn, chatted to Tubum about feeling star-struck when working with Crockett, “Charley Crockett was so cool. Shooting that scene, I was like, ‘You’re working, stop watching the show’”. Josh Duhamel, who portrays Staten, echoed Kelly's sentiments, revealing, “I became a huge fan of Charley Crockett. There really is something magical about when you find the right piece of music with the right visual and they just go together so beautifully. It’s unbelievable what music can do and how much it can really lift the viewing experience”.
The entire first season of Ransom Canyon is available via Netflix, with the show being rather accurately billed as an addictive, entertaining fusion of Virgin River and Yellowstone. The show follows the interwoven lives of a trio of Austin legacy ranches as they contend with harrowing tragedy, destructive greed and long-buried love.
