After Thomas Rhett dropped fourteen adoring, heartwarming songs dedicated to his wife, Lauren, as part of his 2024 About a Woman album, a number of listeners speculated that he might want to test out some different thematic material with his next project.

But let's be honest, TR is at his wholesome, endearing best when he's crooning sweetly to his wife, and thankfully, it looks like there are plenty more songs to be sung about his marriage. Although he knows his way around an uptempo beat and an earworm chorus better than anyone, Thomas Rhett is in his element when he's delivering soulful, sincere reflections on love across a sparse, noodling acoustic guitar.

In a brand new snippet titled ‘Stubborn’, the Georgia native reels off a slew of instances when something might be described in this way, such as “a horse that don't wanna be broke”, “the smell of cigarette smoke” or “a wrench in a railroad track”.

In a classic Nashvillian songwriting flip, Thomas Rhett ends up by portraying a more positive way in which someone can be considered stubborn, as he underlines that he will relentlessly fight for his relationship with Lauren until the end of his days.

Rhett muses, “But when I throw my heart into something, I'm in it ‘til I'm covered, six feet under / Oh, the last thing that I'll do, is quit on me and you, baby, I'm just too stubborn”.

It's the kind of beautifully intricate, heartfelt lyricism that Thomas Rhett always manages to lace into his albums, but that often gets overshadowed by his bigger, pop-leaning anthems, such as the infectious ‘Somethin’ Bout a Woman‘ with Teddy Swims.

It must be said that ’Stubborn’ would fit perfectly on Country Again (Side B), the long-awaited sequel to Thomas Rhett's acclaimed 2021 record, which found Rhett dialled back his genre-blending inclinations and offering up his most intimate project to date.

Since then, he's returned to the variegated, R&B-infused palette his fans know and love, but nonetheless, the vast majority of his listenership still long to hear another body of work in the mould of Country Again (Side A), which spawned masterful tracks such as ‘What's Your Country Song’, ‘Want It Again’, ‘Ya Heard’ and ‘Heaven Right Now’.

It appears Thomas Rhett has shelved Country Again (Side B), but given how vehemently fans still call for TR to drop it, we're holding out hope that we'll get to hear the keenly anticipated project before too long. Whatever Rhett's plans are for his About a Woman follow-up, one thing is for sure - ‘Stubborn’ has to be on the tracklist.
