Vincent Mason is making a name for himself as one of the new purveyors of sad boy country music.

What can we say, the Georgia fella has this way of taking heartbreak and making it okay to feel down.

It's certainly helping those of us feeling the lovesick blues feel understood, and, in a new interview with Holler, Mason explained just where that penchant for a sorrowfully written song comes from.

"Being a John Mayer fan, that's always been a common theme with him," Mason reflected, citing the 'Why Georgia' singer as one of his biggest influences. "The more I learned about country music, I realized that a lot of it has to do with being heartbroken. I think, if you do get your heart broken in your life, it kind of becomes something you can lean on".

The 'Hell Is A Dance Floor' singer shared how, the more he delved into the catalogues of his favourite artists, the more passionate he would feel about the sadder songs of those he loved. "I always remember I thought it was cool that Morgan Wallen, Parker McCollum and Eric Church took that feeling of being heartbroken and made it something cool".

Mason went on to explain that, while he's certainly a sucker for a sad song, it's not necessarily where he sees his entire discography sitting - not that he would have a problem with that if it did. "I'm not heartbroken and sad all the time, it's just those are my favorite songs. There are different parts of my life and writing themes that I'd love to keep diving into”.

He expanded, "I would love to figure out how to express the flip side of who I am and make it more of a collective thing. But, if it does end up that most of my discography ends up being those kind of sad, slow country songs - or even fast heartbreak - I don't have a problem with that".

Mason obviously understands early on here the way he works best, and what speaks most to him, as well as how both his mind and heart works when it comes to writing songs. He underlines, “It's whatever makes you feel the best as an artist, you know - it always takes me a little minute, like I have to write it after the fact. If I feel something, I can't really do it in the moment, and then six months later, I'm like, 'I feel like I have an understanding of it'. I can try to write about it then”.

It's been some start to the 24-year-old's career since signing with MCA Nashville and Interscope to begin releasing music. 'Hell Is A Dance Floor' has been a streaming smash, while further singles 'Speak of the Devil', 'Heart Like This' and 'Train of Thought' have all seeped into the brains of the country music community, immediately introducing Mason as an assured songwriter with substance.

It's only set to rise from there - the singer is heading out with Riley Green on the Damn Country Music Tour next month, while his brand new single, 'Wish You Well', came out on Valentine's Day (Feb 14), and is co-written by country songwriting icon Jessie Jo Dillon.
