In a touching tribute to his father, Nate Smith has shared a poignant lyric video for his new song, ‘Dad’s Don’t Die’.
In the heartfelt caption on Instagram, Smith wrote, “Dads Don't Die... they live on through us and with us. Whether you've lost your dad, need to forgive your dad, or miss your dad, this song is for you. Dad, I love you so much. Don't ever leave me”.
Against a golden hour sunset over the ocean, waves lapping the shore and birds quietly soaring out of shot, the ‘Whiskey On You’ singer’s gravelly voice carries the sorrowful chorus.
Nate Smith wistfully reflects, “Dad’s don’t die / They still make you laugh / Still make you cry / Still make you mad / The day it dawns / That you were wrong / And he was right”.
Last teased in November 2024, the ballad is painfully relatable for his fans, with many commenting to share how much the clip has helped them navigate their own grief.
Nate Smith’s latest album, ‘California Gold’, was released only six months ago, but the California native has since been teasing a lot of new music. Tracks titled ‘Rooftops’ and ‘Navigator’ have played a key part in his social media videos, with his most recent track, ‘Nights These Days’, seemingly being lined up as his next release.
‘Dad’s Don’t Die’ sits harmoniously with another unreleased teaser, ‘No Stranger To The Pain’, during which Smith shares a more vulnerable side to his artistry. Last month, he spoke to Holler about the juxtaposition of excitement and apprehension in putting out such a different sound, “I believe in this song so much,” he shared while in London, “But it’s really, really, really tough. It’s really raw and real.”
With ‘California Gold’ still in its infancy, we might not be seeing a full body of work in the immediate future - but that doesn’t mean to say we won’t be drip-fed some singles this summer…

“Dad’s don’t die,
They still make you laugh
Still make you cry
Still make you mad
The day it dawns
That you were wrong
And he was right
-
Dad’s don’t die
And neither does the love
They leave behind
That’s the holy truth
I hold onto
Until I see you
In the next life
Where there’s no pain
No goodbyes
And dads don’t die”
