Theo Von and Morgan Wallen might be one of our favourite friendships in today's country music world, with the two regularly popping up together around Tennessee.
During the latest episode of Von's This Past Weekend podcast with a different Morgan - comedian, Leanne Morgan - the duo discussed their mutual friendship with Wallen.
Leanne revealed that she'd known Wallen back when he was a landscaper, with the two having performed on the same bill at a local corporate event, long before he appeared on The Voice USA and became a country megastar. The much-loved comedian went on to recall how Wallen had dated one of her daughters, Maggie, “Now he did take my Maggie, my middle child, on a couple of dates. But she said, ‘I think he likes wild girls that like to key cars.’ And see, my children went to a Christian school and were told not to. But she said, she thought he was darling, and she said - this was a long time ago, before he hit big - ‘He liked girls that like to fight in the yard’. That’s okay. There’s pretty girls in Powell. They were all from Powell, Tennessee. And he was a baseball player, and mowed. I get it”.
Leanne shared that she'd warmed to Wallen when they'd first met, and promised to make him a casserole at the time. Later in their conversation on This Past Weekend, Leanne amusingly offers Von the same, “Honey, I'll make you a casserole”.
Von light-heartedly responds, “Yeah, you promised Morgan one. Look, you make me one, I'll give it to Morgan. I'm gonna see him tomorrow at Bible Study actually, so...”
Leanne can't contain her delight, “You will see him at Bible Study?”, before reflecting that she could see Wallen one day exploring a role in the church, much like his father, who was a pastor, “I think he's gonna end up preaching, that little thing”.
Wallen has always been vocal about his faith, exploring his relationship with God and Jesus on fan-favourite songs such as ‘Don't Think Jesus’, ‘I Wrote The Book’ and ‘The Dealer’. He's also shared covers of traditional hymns via socials. Earlier in the year, the Sneedville native reflected on his Jesus-inspired Post Malone duet, ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’, “I love the song. I love the imagery. You know, me as a Christian, anytime I can throw a little hint of that in my music, I'm always all for it”.
In response to Leanne, Von outlines that he's not sure where Wallen will end up, beyond music, “I have no idea”, before offering a heartwarming tribute to his buddy, “I just know...he's an inspiring guy. Morgan is...He is him, you know? He is him”.
Leanne echoes his sentiments, donning Wallen “authentic”, adding, “But you're authentic too, darlin’. And y'all are in a Bible Study! Is it a Beth Moore? What're y'all studying?”
Von then explains that this week is a more informal session, “I mean, tomorrow, I think we're watching a movie. But it is Bible Study, yeah. I'm not sure what chapter we're on at the moment”, with Leanne then reflecting on her own experience in a similar group, “I'm not in one, but I used to be in one when I was raising my children. But I'm not in one. But I need to be disciplined and do it on my own”.
With his trademark humour, Von replies, “Well that's when you need the Lord the most, when you're raising those little henchwomen and men...But no, I'll tell him you said, ‘Hey’”.
While we're not sure if the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter will ever become a full-time preacher, we can definitely see him doubling-down on his faith in his music.
We wouldn't be surprised if Wallen one day drops a gospel album, following in the footsteps of other country stars such as Carrie Underwood, and we'd love to see the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper collaborating with Contemporary Christian Music hitmakers such as Forrest Frank, Brandon Lake and Anne Wilson. The latter joined Wallen on tour this year, and they would undoubtedly sound incredible together.
In the meantime, we're just glad to see the country titan taking care of himself during his off-season and spending time with friends like Von, as he gears up for his eagerly anticipated 2026 Still the Problem Tour. And we're still keeping our fingers crossed we might get a deluxe version of his I'm the Problem album to go alongside it...
