Country-rockers Shane Smith & The Saints have performed three sublime offerings as part of their keenly anticipated Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks.
Each track provides the Austin troubadours the chance to showcase a different string to their bow, with their set consisting of ‘All I See is You’, ‘Right Side of the Ground’ and ‘All the Way’.
The much-loved band's latest album, Norther, dropped in March, and was peppered by thunderous, electric-guitar-fuelled anthems and crackled with storm-laden imagery.
Shane Smith's weighty rasp lends itself to these kinds of cavernous, arena-ready tracks, but in this new Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, the removal of the raging electric guitars gives the composition a sparse and intimate feel.
On ‘All the Way’, one of the stand-outs from Norther, Shane Smith's drawn-in, sincere delivery floats gently across an intricate keyboard as he warmly serenades his lover.
The sentiment behind ‘All I See is You’ is equally as endearing, with the yearning cry of the accompanying fiddle and the undulating strum of the acoustic guitars combining, as a result accentuating the emotional gravitas that's laced into every lyric.
It's easy to see why Taylor Sheridan chose to incorporate this aching track into the rich fabric of Yellowstone, with ‘All I See is You’ appearing in Season Four. Following this, Shane Smith & The Saints were invited to perform three songs as part of John Dutton's inauguration in the the subsequent season of the hit neo-Western series.
The last of the three songs performed as part of this acoustic session is the ominously titled ‘Right Side of the Ground’, which carries the delicacy of their rendition of ‘All the Way’, but with the crucial addition of the fiddle. Shane Smith's gravelly delivery is boosted by the introduction of haunting, ethereal harmonies, with his growl at times feeling reminiscent of Colter Wall's more recent vocal style.
The diverse but complementary strands of each song come together for an impressive trio of performances, which were captured at Nashville's striking Riverside Revival venue.
