When Riley Green scored his first No.1 single, he celebrated like any proud son would: by buying his parents a new ride.
But as soon as his dad got behind the wheel, things took a turn—literally.
Speaking on Audacy's Katie & Company podcast with Katie Neal, the country star shared how, after topping the country radio charts with 'There Was This Girl,' he treated his mom and dad to new vehicles.
"I've always had vehicles—I buy cars all the time, it's kind of like my little hobby," Green said. "But I hadn’t been as excited buying a car as I was buying her one. Or buying my dad a truck—I really enjoy that."
He continued: "They've never lived above their means—my dad has never had a nice truck. I mean, as soon as I bought him one, he backed it into something."
As dry as Green's humor is, he's quick to add: "They appreciate it."
When asked what draws him to cars, Green admitted it's not the mechanics—it's the look and feel of vintage rides.
"I don't really have any mechanical knowledge. We did carpentry growing up, so I never really learned about that stuff—but I've always loved old cars."
His passion runs deep. On tour, Green would browse Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, hunting for fixer-uppers. "My hobby was buying 'em," he said. "When I was on the road, I’d go buy these old, junky cars and fix them up."
That hobby got put to the test early on. "On my first major tour with Brad Paisley, I bought a Chrysler LeBaron. $3,000—from a guy in a nursing home. It had wooden sides, it’s a convertible... the ugliest car ever."
"I drove it to the venue, was so excited—and it broke down. We had to push it out of the way so Brad’s buses could get out. We left it in Prior Lake and had to ship it home. I still have it."
Green even points fans to the video for his latest No.1 single, 'Worst Way,' for a peek at one of his favorite rides. "I’ve always loved those early Broncos—‘66, ‘67—and I’ve got a ‘73 that was in that video. It’s sharp. It’s green."
And the LeBaron obsession? Still alive and well. "I bought another one too. It’s kinda charcoal and wood—even uglier than the first."
"I just keep adding them to my barn back home. It’s just vehicles. None of them crank, all the batteries are dead—but it’s awesome to go look at them."
Riley Green is currently out on the Damn Country Music Tour, crossing the U.S. before heading across the pond for three sold-out nights in London and a full run across the UK and Ireland.
