Which ever of the five stages of post-breakup grief you’re in, there'll always be a country song that fits it. Whether it's anger, bargaining, depression or acceptance, country music's got you covered. Even denial, that most confusing of all the stages, has its soundtrack, such as Pam Tillis' 90s country anthem 'Cleopatra, Queen of Denial' or the George Jones classic 'She Thinks I Still Care,' the story of a man who tries to convince himself and everyone else around him that he no longer has feelings for his ex-lover, despite his actions clearly showing the opposite.
Anyone going through post-breakup denial right now can add to that list the brilliant new collaboration between two superpowers of modern music, the multi-hyphenate pop country juggernaut Jessie James Decker and Grammy award winning soul legend Joss Stone, with their new sassy, pop-country gem, 'I Never Miss Him Anymore.'
"I never miss him anymore / My heart ain’t breakin’ like before," the pair sing, claiming to not be aware of the new girl he's moved on with or to be taking any late-night drive bys past an ex's house, but their emotions give them away.
"The lady doth protest too much, methinks," to quote Queen Gertrude in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
"He’s not always on my mind / I’m not crying all the time / I never miss him anymore / No not first thing in the morning, no no / Or even early afternoon / I never ever in the evening when the red wine starts to pour / I never miss him anymore."
Written by songwriting heavyweights Johan Fransson (SEVENTEEN, Chris Stapleton), Audra Mae (Christina Aguilera, Fall Out Boy), and Caroline Watkins (Megan Moroney, Ella Langley), the duet pairs Jessie with Joss as they trade their denial-filled verses over a smooth, late night guitar groove that perfectly matches the mooniness of the lyrics.
“I grew up listening to Joss’s records, and I’ll never forget watching her perform barefoot at the Grammy’s, thinking she was the coolest and had such a powerful voice,” said Decker. “I remember telling myself, ‘One day I’d love to sing with her.’ She’s as real as it gets, and working with her has been such a joy. She’s truly a talent, and this experience proves that if you manifest something, it really can come true. I manifested us working together—and here we are.”
Stone added, “I met Jessie on a plane randomly. I had no idea she had such a lovely voice at the time. I just knew she had a light, Jessie was so warm and welcoming. My husband finally clued me into the fact that she can seriously sing. We kept in touch and now we get to collab on this song. What a blessing. I love these moments of magic we get to have in this life. Goes to show if your door is open then goodness can come flooding in.”
