It isn't always advisable to turn up at random hotel rooms for breakfast during AmericanaFest, but as we'd been invited there on the pretence that something "magical" would happen and there would be burritos when we got there, we figured it was a risk worth taking.
In the wonderful chaos of AmericanaFest last week our morning spent with Boy Golden in his hotel room was one of our absolute highlights as he played us a few tracks from his new record and performed a few songs acoustically for us.
"If we only have this moment, what you do in this moment is who you are, who do you want to be?" Boy Golden asked us that morning as he introduced the song 'Suffer,' a song that explores the Buddhist inspired concept that the one thing that unites us all is our human capacity to suffer.
What we decided to be in that particular moment was burrito gobbling, country music loving, freeloaders, but I guess we're okay with that being who we are.
Today he announces the release of that album, Best of Our Possible Lives, for 13 February next year via Six Shooter Records. Boy Golden is the nom de plume of songwriter Liam Duncan - a persona that allows him to create honestly and freely. His three previous albums - For Eden, For Jimmy and the lemon-yellow-leisure-suited Church of Better Daze - served as a psychic clearing for Best of Our Possible Lives. This new work finds him mid-journey, reckoning with the self as it was, as it is and as it can be.
Recorded and produced by Robbie Lackritz at Lucy’s Meat Market in Los Angeles and featuring legendary bassist Pino Palladino, best known for his work with D’Angelo, Adele, The Who and Elton John, among others, Best of Our Possible Lives is a twelve-song opus of self-discovery and life affirming, hopeful homespun philosophies set to a blend of soft '80s folk pop, 90s neo-traditionalist country and breezy tropical rock.
Today, Boy Golden gives us the first taste of the album with 'Suffer,' transformed for the album from the acoustic version he played us in his hotel room into a cowbell bashing slice of self-consciously louche and artful indie rock and roll with Boy Golden delivering a blistering State of the Nation address.
"Prices go up and they don’t come down / Costs forty bucks just to hang around," he sings, doing his most respectful Dylan. "I know people sleeping on the ground / Prices go up and they don’t come down / I wanna know where my money went / I want a new fucking president / Wanna believe that God is benevolent and I wanna know where my money went."
“I write songs to seek understanding," he explains about the song. "Suffering, the first of the Four Noble Truths, is universal. It takes different shapes and forms and magnitudes, but the pain of change, the pain of mortality, the pain of living in bodies we did not choose, is shared."
"It can’t help but be a political song, because our lives have inherent political consequences, but I don’t believe it to be a partisan song," he adds. "I write songs to find the threads that bind us all together."
"The song came when my ideals were being tested and shattered by the world as it is now. I hope that anyone listening to this song can come to the same conclusion that I did: If we only have this moment, what you do in this moment is who you are."

The album’s title was inspired by Boy Golden’s reflections on philosopher Leibniz’s argument that, if God is omnipotent, omniscient, and benevolent, this must be the best of all possible worlds. In the face of suffering and injustice, Boy Golden reframes the idea: being present and living through each moment, somehow accepting it as it is, is our only true option to find peace in the chaos around us.
Boy Golden’s philosophy is simple: By living here—now—in this moment—we create the Best of Our Possible Lives. With a major 2026 tour ahead and anticipation building, this moment truly belongs to Boy Golden.
