Post Malone surprised the packed-out Bonnaroo Festival crowd by bringing out his good friend and bluegrass phenom, Billy Strings, to perform his hit tracks, ‘rockstar’ and ’Stay’.
Both songs appear on Post Malone's widely celebrated 2019 album, beerbongs & bentleys, with ‘rockstar’ one of the genre-blending maverick's eight Diamond-certified singles. Posty possesses more Diamond plaques than any other artist, with his Swae Lee duet, ’Sunflower’, the only song in history to go double-Diamond.
Even though ‘rockstar’ has become a mainstay in Post Malone's electric live setlist, it was an intriguing choice to have Billy Strings accompany him for the track, which is one of Posty's rap anthems and differs starkly to his newer, country-inspired material.
Although used to sparser arrangements, Billy Strings still looked at home amidst the on-stage flames and histrionics, with Posty then stripping things back for ‘Stay’, an acoustic ballad that allowed Billy to showcase his signature guitar skills.
It's not the first time Post Malone and Billy Strings have teamed up, with Posty emerging a few years ago during Billy's show to deliver an enchanting cover of Johnny Cash's ‘Cocaine Blues’.
Given the duo's friendship, and the star-studded guest-list for Post Malone's debut country album, which is set to feature Morgan Wallen, Blake Shelton, Luke Combs and more, fans are desperately hoping Billy Strings makes an appearance on the project.
Posty has consistently reminded listeners that he's not afraid to experiment with different sub-genres linked to country, and we think seeing the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter take on bluegrass alongside Billy would be a spectacular addition to the record.
