As Morgan Wallen has blossomed into one of the biggest stars in music, the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker has - understandably - become more tight-lipped when it comes to his new releases. Rather than embarking on the traditional country press circuit, Wallen has made rare but high-profile appearances via a carefully curated series of outlets, such as Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast or Saturday Night Live.
Neither of these offered in-depth insights into the creation of Wallen's latest album, I'm the Problem, so we're always fascinated when the Sneedville native decides to shed some additional light on how his widely celebrated new project came about.
Just recently, for instance, the ‘Just in Case’ crooner has reflected on the rollercoaster ride of emotions he experienced when putting together the sprawling, 37-song record during a chat with Mark Drury for Drury Outdoors as part of a hunting trip.
While travelling to their deer-stand, Drury asks Wallen about what's been keeping him busy of later, with the latter responding that he's been focussed on his new album. The interview seemingly took place in January 2025, before the record's arrival.
Drury then questions if Wallen enjoys this part of the process, “Yeah, I do. I mean, it's just like anything else. There's days when I think I hate it, just because it's hard. Some days...it just happens like it's supposed to, and the plan is coming together”.
He expands, “It's just fun when it's like that...It's challenging, definitely. It's challenging, especially when you get...100 songs in, you know, or however many songs I've got out, but...I don't want to say the exact same thing. I try not to sound the exact same”.
Wallen outlines that he's acutely aware that many fans would rather he just imitates the sound of his earlier hits, but he's keen to switch it up, “Some people might want me to sound the exact same, but for me I gotta go out and sing it...So far we've been good at keeping things with variety. So when I go play a show, it's actually enjoyable...No songs are alike, so it makes it much more enjoyable for me”.
Listening to I'm the Problem, it's evident that Wallen has been striving to explore new textures and sonic territory, with the genre-blending maverick flitting between traditional country on ‘The Dealer’, ‘Superman’ and ’Revelation’ to indie-rock on ‘Genesis’ and ‘Dark Til Daylight’, before gifting us straight-up trap on ‘Miami’.
It's refreshingly eclectic - and arguably, it needs to be to warrant its lengthy tracklist. Wallen delights in keeping his listeners on his toes by introducing surprising new elements into the production and instrumentation, while still ensuring it feels cohesive through his persistently brooding and unwaveringly compelling vocals.
The ‘Love Somebody’ singer-songwriter is currently in the middle of his I'm the Problem tour across the US and Canada, with shows still on the books in Toronto and Edmonton.
