In the past, when faced with backlash or scrutiny, Morgan Wallen's strategy has generally been to lay low and wait for it to all blow over - an approach that has served him well.
However, as he finds himself at the eye of another media storm following his hurried exit from Saturday Night Live last weekend, and his subsequent ‘Get me to God's country’ post, Wallen has opted for a more playful means of handling this controversy.
Hilariously, the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper is poking fun at the SNL commotion with a new Get Me to God's Country merchandise range, featuring two stylish caps and a retro t-shirt.
It's undoubtedly a pointed move from the Sneedville megastar, and perhaps shows that the hubbub surrounding his SNL exit was made to be a bigger deal than it really was.
This comes after Wallen shared a new clip of his unreleased fan-favourite, ‘Come Back As A Redneck’, which finds him rebuking a judgemental city-slicker - seemingly a dig at SNL.
During the end credits, after Morgan Wallen had delivered eye-catching performances of his two new singles, ‘I'm the Problem’ and ‘Just in Case’, Wallen briefly hugged the episode's host, Mikey Madison, before walking off stage and past the camera.
It's an SNL tradition for the musical guest to stay behind and join in with the congratulations with the rest of the cast - as Wallen knows, having appeared on the show back in 2020.
Then, the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter added fuel to the fire when he shared a photo of his private jet to his Instagram Story, along with the caption, ‘Get me to God's country’, implying he was desperate to leave New York and return to the sticks.
It's not clear why Morgan Wallen was so keen to leave both the SNL stage and the city as a whole, but there have been rumours of tensions between Wallen and the cast, potentially due to the controversy surrounding his first appearance on the sketch show in 2020. Wallen was temporarily dropped from SNL after he was videoed breaking COVID-19 protocols. Alternatively, some have speculated there were political divides to blame, while others have suggested that the SNL cast and crew were hostile to Wallen from the moment he walked on-set.
Either way, Morgan Wallen's decision to drop this new merchandise range via his official store is a highly amusing way to deal with the turmoil. Could ‘Get me to God's country’ also be some kind of hint as to a song-title on Wallen's new album, I'm the Problem?
We'll have to wait and see, but with the country titan teasing part of the tracklist during his SNL ‘Just in Case’ performance, we're on high alert for any further easter eggs.
