Tucker Wetmore has taken country music by storm over the last several months, releasing songs like ‘Wine Into Whiskey’ and ‘Wind Up Missin’ You’ to viral acclaim. Now, he's showing fans what else he has up his sleeve.
On Friday (Oct. 4), the quickly rising star dropped his debut EP, Waves on a Sunset, an 8-track project that finds the artist flexing his versatility while also further showcasing the talent that has kept him on top lately.
Among his recent offerings is 'Mister Miss Her', a solemn ballad poised to join country's lengthy songbook of heartbroken hits.
'Mister Miss Her' is straightforward country, born from a delicate wash of guitar riffs and the distant wail of lap steel. Muffled drum hits and atmospheric strings may fill out the forlorn tune, but for the most part, 'Mister Miss Her' chronicles misery with just a few chords and the truth.
"They called me 'Lucky'
When that girl was mine to hold
'Cause when she loved me
All that I touched turned to gold
But all my luck ran out
'Cause she's on the run now
Making good on goodbye
So these days I just go by"
In the words of the '80s rock wonders, Cinderella, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." Tucker Wetmore is struggling with the same bitter truth in 'Mister Miss Her.'
He had the love of a good women until he didn't, and now, he's left to mourn her loss and drink away her memory. He was once praised for having found her, previously known the world over as a lucky man, but now, he's simply referred to as:
"Mister Miss Her
I live on memory lane
All the bartenders
They know me by name
Lonely is my only friend
And I mix all my gin with misery
'Cause I'm Mister Miss Her
But she ain't missing me"
Throughout the song, he wears his heartache on his sleeve, resigned to reminiscing about the life he once had before he threw it all away with harsh words and hard feelings.
"Now I'm drowning in the past," he admits, "With every passing second / And when a broke heart's what you're left with / You get the man, the myth, the legend ... Mister Miss Her."
Perhaps the saddest reality of the tune isn't his broken heart or his constant hand-wringing, it's the fact that she likely isn't missing him back. Still, he's willing to admit:
"This misfit made a mistake
'Cause she's missing calls
'Cause she's Miss Ain't Ever Coming Back Again
And that's how you turn into... Mister Miss Her"
"‘Mister Miss Her’ is just a country breakup song," Wetmore explained during a conversation with Holler, but said he has more to offer fans than the paint-by-numbers country ballad.
"I don't want to be put in a box," he added. "I don't want people to say, ‘Oh, this is the only type of music he's going to make, and this is what you can expect from him’. No, I will do more trappier stuff, and I will do country stuff, because I love music. Nobody listens to one kind of music, because there's so much beauty in music, across all genres...It's always country, but I'm not opposed to flirting with other genres”. With a twinkle in his eye, Tucker excitedly adds a statement of intent, “Nobody's seen who I am yet...the EP is scratching the surface of what's coming”.
During the interview, though, he went on to explain that all the tracks on Waves on a Sunset have a purpose.
“It was all very intentional”, he offered, “I hope people really dive into the purpose behind every song placement, especially at the end. When the album comes next year, they'll see, ‘Oh, that's why he chose ‘Mister Miss Her’. I'm going to do something with the album too, where it's like, ‘Oh, this is why’. It's all storytelling. It's almost like songwriting within songs. I'm not going to say what my whole idea behind the album is yet, but what is coming on Friday is very intentional”.
They called me lucky
When that girl was mine to hold
'Cause when she loved me
All that I touched turned to gold
But all my luck ran out
'Cause she's on the run now
Making good on goodbye
So these days I just go by
Mister Miss Her
I live on memory lane
All the bartenders
They know me by name
Lonely is my only friend
And I mix all my gin with misery
'Cause I'm Mister Miss Her
But she ain't missing me
Well, I called her crazy
And she called me the worst
And hell, I may be
The way I made her hurt
Now I'm drowning in the past
With every passing second
And when a broke heart's what you're left with
You get the man, the myth, the legend
Mister Miss Her
I live on memory lane
All the bartenders
They know me by name
Lonely is my only friend
And I mix all my gin with misery
'Cause I'm Mister Miss Her
But she ain't missing me
This misfit made a mistake
'Cause she's missing calls
'Cause she's Miss Ain't Ever Coming Back Again
And that's how you turn into
Mister Miss Her
I live on memory lane
All the bartenders
They know me by name
Lonely is my only friend
And I mix all my gin with misery
'Cause I'm Mister Miss Her
But she ain't missing me
'Cause I'm Mister Miss Her
But she ain't missing me
