Michael Marcagi Wants to Ease Your Seasonal Depression with Joyful New Song, ‘Unlocks Me’

Folk prodigy Michael Marcagi continues his hot streak of releases with ‘Unlocks Me’, a joyful, rose-tinted take on love - one he hopes will help listeners to shake off the Winter Blues.

Marcagi has become synonymous with a more introspective and perhaps melancholic ambience, through popular singles such as ‘Humbling’ and ‘Wish I Never Met You’.

Let's not forget that Marcagi's break-out hit, though - the immensely viral ‘Scared to Start’ - was a vibrant, energising battle-cry for those yearning to chase their dreams.

‘Unlocks Me’ feels like the fruits of such an adventure, with the ‘Midwest Kid’ singer-songwriter serenading his lover with a list of all the qualities he adores the most about her. Marcagi's gentle, enchanting croons drift peacefully across the bright, uplifting instrumental, before he launches into the vibrant, galvanising hook.

Speaking ahead of its release, Marcagi reflects on how ‘Unlocks Me’ feels like a major step in his songwriting, “This song means a whole lot to me and I finally allowed myself to write a happy song. Hope it helps out with the winter seasonal depression”. Excitingly, the fast-emerging artist then teases, “More songs to come!”

Elsewhere, Marcagi muses, “‘Unlocks Me’ is the first time I’ve been this open with who I am and where I’ve come from in my songwriting. It’s about learning more about who I am, and the changes I’ve gone through in the past few years, and the strange feeling of letting your walls come down and letting yourself be happy for once”.

It's a cri-de-coeur we could all draw on, particularly as the Winter months bring with them a disheartening frostiness and bleakness, and as we long to see the sunshine past 4pm. As Marcagi suggests, it's a period when we should be a little more forgiving of ourselves if we're feeling down, and allow ourselves to feel happy. ‘Unlocks Me’ might not be a one-shot-cure for the complex intricacies and facets of Seasonal Depression, but this dose of sonic sunshine certainly doesn't hurt.
