“The way the world is going, ain’t where I’m at.”
That resolute sentiment forms the crux of Margo Price's new single, 'Don't Wake Me Up', and the latest glimpse inside her upcoming album, Hard Headed Woman.
The topical tune, which tips a hat to folk legend Bob Dylan and draws inspiration from poet Frank Stanford, spent much of its life as a poem on forgotten paper, before the artist's husband resurrected it.
As Price explains in a statement: “My husband and co-writer, Jeremy Ivey, found the idea I had scribbled from my abandoned notebook, and we resurrected it with a melody. The whole thing came together in ten minutes in one of those lightning bolt moments where you’re tapped into something bigger than yourself. I wanted to remind people of all the places and ways that we are still allowed to dream even when the outside world seems like a nightmare."
Price recruited rising singer-songwriter Jesse Welles for the track, his husky commentary adding a layer of urgency to the plucky number.
"Jesse Welles is one of my favorite new songwriters and a rare prolific artist who really has something to say," Price shared of her collaborator. "I met him at Farm Aid and I became a big fan of his lyrics as well as his voice. I’m so grateful he could join me to sing on this song.”
'Don't Wake Me Up' arrives on Tuesday (July 15) accompanied by a new music video, directed by Hannah Gray Hall, in the style of Dylan’s 1965 opus, 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', as it flashes through an Americana daydream of cow pastures, Waffle Houses, dive bars and beyond.
The single joins the previously released 'Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down', both set to appear on Hard Headed Woman, arriving Aug. 29.
Shortly after the album's release, Price will hit the road on her Wild At Heart Tour with these songs and more in tow. Much of this fall will see her take on theatres and ballrooms across North America.
