Luke Combs has offered a powerhouse live rendition of his tempestuous Twisters: The Album stand-out, ‘Ain't No Love in Oklahoma’, during the 2024 CMA Awards in Nashville.
Ahead of the ceremony, the North Carolina hitmaker promised fans he'd be pulling out all the stops to ensure the performance matches the stormy, rip-roaring atmosphere of the track.
It's safe to say he delivered, with Luke Combs stretching his signature guttural rasp across the ‘Ain't No Love in Oklahoma’ battle-cry, as the ball-cap donning megastar stood amidst wave after wave of histrionics. Prior to the show, there were some concerns expressed about the prospect of Combs spearheading a twister-themed performance so soon after his incredible efforts at the Concert for Carolina Hurricane Helene benefit concert. Thankfully, though, he evaded any thorny territory by placing the emphasis on the existential angst and emotional intensity that drives the song itself, rather than leaning into the storm imagery from the film.
Speaking backstage before his performance, Luke Combs recalled how ’Ain't No Love in Oklahoma’ came about, “I got a call before the movie came about, and they wanted to do an original soundtrack. They wanted me to write something uptempo and fun and fast, and that's what we did, and it turned out to be really great. I didn't really know what to expect. I don't have too much experience doing stuff like that”.
The ‘Love You Anyway’ chart-topper expanded, “The performance is really high energy, a lot of cool lights and fire and stuff we've never done...I think it makes it a little bit cooler for us...Me and my band, we really shy away from that stuff, we like to let the music speak for itself. But I think this song is the perfect time to dip our toe into that”.
It undoubtedly paid off, and we're curious to see whether Luke Combs decides to incorporate similarly daring set designs and staging embellishments when he hits the road again in 2025.
