Zach Bryan might have made his name off the back of his sombre, weighty reflections on life, love, loss and heartbreak - but the Oklahoma native also makes room for some light-hearted joking around when he's recording new music in the studio.
Today (April 23rd), the ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker has taken to Instagram to share a playful, tongue-in-cheek new version of his 2022 hit, ‘If She Wants a Cowboy’.
The uptempo offering, which appeared on Zach Bryan's magnum opus, American Heartbreak, pokes fun at Nashville's country music scene, with Bryan mockingly adding Auto-Tune to his vocals and quipping at the end, “Throw it on the damn radio”.
This new snippet, which Zach Bryan has shared to his Instagram Stories, finds the ‘I Remember Everything’ chart-topper adjusting the lyrics to that much-loved track to reference his blockbuster Stagecoach Festival headline set this Friday, April 25th.
Bryan teasingly croons, “Find me a horse that I can cover / Find me some stars to sleep under / Find me a train I'll hop out West / If she wants Stagecoach, I'll Stagecoach the best”.
The original lyric alternates between “If she wants a cowboy, I'll cowboy the best” and “If she wants Nashville, I'll Nashville the best”. Although that 2022 version of ‘If She Wants a Cowboy’ was a thinly veiled jibe at the commercial country music world, it feels like this Stagecoach rendition is simply a jovial nod to his forthcoming set. When Zach Bryan shared his prospective Stagecoach 2025 setlist via socials earlier in the month, ‘If She Wants a Cowboy’ was listed, so perhaps we can look forward to this lyric-change when he takes the stage in a few days’ time.
This is likely just a cheeky clip from Zach Bryan's recent studio sessions, rather than being a version of the track that he is planning to give an official release on streaming platforms.
Having said this, Stagecoach Festival's deal with Amazon Music means artists often release special renditions of old songs or covers in the lead-up to the California extravaganza. Last year, for instance, Post Malone dropped his now-iconic cover of Brad Paisley's ‘I'm Gonna Miss Her’ as an Amazon Music exclusive before his set.
Could Zach Bryan be planning to drop ‘If She Wants a Cowboy (Stagecoach Version)’ or ‘If She Wants Stagecoach’ in the same way? We'll have to wait an see, but we're hoping that, at the very least, Bryan is plotting to share either his long-teased With Heaven On Top EP or his Motorbreath album - or ideally both - in the coming weeks.
