Fast-emerging California duo, Wells Ferrari, are back with their brand new EP, Wasted Time, as the anticipation continues to build ahead of their debut full-length album.
Pivoting around the much-loved title-track, Wasted Time was recorded by Wells Ferrari - comprising Will Wells and Mikey Ferrari - in Los Angeles’ Joshua Tree National Park.
Alongside ‘Wasted Time’, stand-outs from the new seven-song project include the rousing ‘Life After Death’, which showcases the duo's ability to reflect on weighty themes while wrapping this introspection in bright, galvanising instrumentation.
Speaking to Holler ahead of the EP's arrival, Wells Ferrari reflect on embracing varying styles, “It definitely depends on how we’re feeling, we never like to put ourselves in a creative box. We’d say our first EP leaned more towards Rock while the Wasted Time EP leans more towards folk and Americana. We’re excited to finish our debut album to connect all of the above and even explore other genres”.
They expand by teasing that they'll be making another trip into the heart of Joshua Tree soon to work on their eagerly awaited first record, “We make all our music in the desert and we’re heading out there for a couple weeks after tour so we should know more once we get back out there. That place has all the answers”.
You can hear the eclectic influences of legendary acts such as the Eagles - particularly on the title-track - as well as The Allman Brothers Band throughout this vibrant project.
Refreshingly, it's also evident that Wells Ferrari are learning from contemporary trailblazers in the space, too. The duo teamed up once again with their good friend Evan Honer, for instance, for a slew of shows across the UK and Europe. They joke, “This was our third tour with Evan, so we’ve learned many things. But from this past tour in Europe, he knows how to split the G in a Guinness to perfection. The kind of G splitting that we’d write home about, hence what’s going on here...!”
Wells Ferrari pay tribute to the generosity and warmth of Honer and his team, “Witnessing how kind Evan is to every person that he’s around, is always infectious. Evan and his whole touring crew are the best time. And a Wells Ferrari show consists of a glimpse into our friendship. Plenty of jokes but also deep personal stories, exploring the highs or lows of life. We invite people into who we are and why we are doing what we do. We want people to feel like they’re hanging with us on the day we wrote the songs at that small adobe house in 29 Palms”.
Wells Ferrari highlight how they are incorporating that same mindset and keenness to strike a chord with fans into their career, “Our music is based on conversation, and we try to capture the importance of human connection and conversation between us to hopefully welcome other people to find community through the songs. Our biggest goal is for people to come to our shows and feel at home”.
As for what's next, the duo hint that there is plenty to look forward to, such as “our album (hopefully early next year) and our website! People have been asking to be able to buy merch online for over a year and we finally got around to it… sorry to those people for the delay. We may or may not have some collabs/features in the new year with some good friends of ours. We’re also doing a special live taping that we’ve always dreamt of doing sometime soon... stay tuned for that!”
If the sonic variegation, lyrical depth and wonderfully rich textures that permeate Wasted Time are anything to go by, it's safe to say we've got reason to be excited about what's next for these up-and-coming folk and Americana-leaning troubadours.
