In between tour stops from Memphis to Mississippi earlier this month, Lainey Wilson spent a day at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee, meeting and performing for patients there.
The country hitmaker put on a show for more than 150 attendees, kicking off her performance with her Bell Bottom Country hit 'Heart Like a Truck' – she told the patients they were the ones with hearts like trucks – and turning the outing into one big sing-along. She took song requests from the crowd, and eventually, incited a dance party among them.
"This is what it’s all about right here," Wilson shared of the special day across her social media. "To each and every person I got to meet at @stjude...you are truly an inspiration."
Wilson's visit to the children's hospital marked a full-circle moment in her own career. She has been a long-time supporter of St. Jude programs; but 16 years ago, while making a living as a Hannah Montana impersonator, she performed her final gig as the Disney Channel persona at St. Jude.
On this particular outing, a patient in recovery after brain surgery came to the front during a performance of 'The Climb.'
“She knew every single word to ‘The Climb,’" the artist described the moment. "There was not a dry eye in the house. I handed her the microphone, and she sang every single word. She handed me the microphone back, and she meant to say ‘Hannah Montana, you’re my star.’ But she said ‘Hannah Montana, I’m your star.’ And I thought, ‘Yes you are, and I got to figure out how I can do this the rest of my life.’ I had one of the most pivotal moments about knowing I’m supposed to do this, right here in this room."
