If someone asked you to predict where Kenny Chesney might be at any given moment, we think you'd have a relatively good chance at being right if you simply said “the beach”.
The gently lapping waves, the hazy sunshine beating down and the feel of the warm sand cushioning your feet as you kick back in an old blue chair - a glass of Blue Chair Bay rum in your hand. It's a serene vignette that has become synonymous with the ‘I Go Back’ hitmaker, with Chesney taking the ‘tiki torch’ from Jimmy Buffett and propelling the tropically-minded Gulf and Western genre into new territory.
However, this past summer, the No Shoes Nation figurehead has been mostly spending his time inside, with Kenny Chesney eschewing his traditional summer stadium tour in order to become the first country artist to headline Las Vegas’ iconic Sphere.
Of course, with the dazzling graphics and immersive screen that Sphere boasts, Chesney and his adoring audience will have felt as though they'd been transported to the beach, as well as a funfair, Neyland Stadium and various other integral places.
But even so, we're sure the Knoxville country legend has been yearning to return to his beloved US Virgin Islands, and judging by his latest Instagram post, it seems he's now back in the balmy idyll that has inspired so many of his tracks over the years.
In a rare social media carousel, Kenny Chesney has shared a couple of photos of him spending some time on a beautiful stretch of sand, as he gazes wistfully out over the ocean.
The ‘Take Her Home’ crooner has captioned the post by simply expressing his gratitude at being able to recharge by the sea, “Good to feel my feet in the sand again”. Chesney's buddy and rock veteran, Sam Hagar, has replied, “damn straight brother 🌴🥂”.
Some fans have noticed that Chesney's good friend and ‘You Had To Be There’ collaborator, Megan Moroney, has also made her way back to the islands, with these stunning, palm-tree-adorned settings seemingly serving as a muse for Moroney's new album.
We're hoping Chesney and Moroney might be hanging out in the Virgin Islands once again, and that if they are, they've had some time to work on a follow-up to ‘You Had To Be There’.
Whether or not he has new music on his mind, we can't be sure, but we suspect Chesney is saving his chart-topping pen for a different kind of writing for the time being. The multiple CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year winner is gearing up to release his first book, HEART*LIFE*MUSIC, with Holly Gleason, on November 4th.
Excitingly, earlier in August, Chesney and Gleason confirmed they'd officially finished editing the keenly anticipated body of work, which will see the duo delving into the ‘Boston’ singer-songwriter's storied career, and the eclectic array of adventures he's had over the past few decades. The book is available to pre-order now.
Last week, Kenny Chesney revealed that he'd be making his fan-favourite album, The Road and The Radio, available on vinyl for the first time ever, with the country titan continuing to treat fans to new releases and experiences throughout 2025.
