The Jelly Roll-Lainey Wilson duet, 'Save Me,' has certainly made its rounds during awards season, the pair having taken the hit to the stage at last year's ACM Awards and People's Choice Country Awards and beyond. But it was Monday night's showcase that proved the song still gets crowds to their feet.
The two country hitmakers teamed up for one more round of their 2023 success at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on April 1, a night that also saw the duo recognized for their respective accomplishments over the last year.
With Jelly Roll being nominated in seven categories and Wilson up for two of her own awards for Country Artist of the Year and Country Song of the Year, it made for an emotionally heightened exchange between the artists once they were in the spotlight together.
Jelly Roll took to the stage first. Mic in hand, aglow in flickering candlelight, the 'Need A Favor' star kicked off 'Save Me' against a wash of delicate strings. Once through the chorus, he introduced Wilson, who effortlessly picked up her verse.
From there, the song built into an eye-dampening display of the two artists' dynamic partnership, both of their powerhouse vocals working in tandem in the gripping song.
To the audience, a standing ovation seemed the only appropriate response.
Elsewhere in the night, Wilson's 'Heart Like A Truck' would be named Country Song of the Year, and Jelly Roll would take home two of his seven nods – Best New Artist in both the Pop and Country categories.
